please help me work this out
« on: April 23, 2011, 20:26:23 pm »
Hi my DD is nearly 11 months and for some weeks now her night sleep has been awful. It started with EW and NW when she was 9 months old and she was only doing 9h nights. I cut her daytime sleep to 2h max and this worked a treat and we were back to at least 11h nights and often 12 or 13h. But now the NW have started again and we had a short night too last night, only 10 hrs.
When she wakes she cries and will stop when I walk in but then she is wide awake for hours. If I leave her she cries and if I stay she happily plays in her cot! I have no idea what to do as she just will not go back to sleep for hrs. I am exhausted.
What I can't figure out is why this is happening again. We are already on 1 nap somedays and TBH these days are better than 2 nap days. The other day she only slept for 35mins at daycare all day and had a great 13h night! Would be so grateful if anyone has any ideas on why this is happening again.

Bex, it sounds like you are in the 2-1.  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=163278.0 Some LOs move to 1 nap early, but 11 months is very early, so I would be careful.  What you could do instead is offer a short cat nap of 20 minutes and then a proper nap, so your A until bedtime isn't as long.

What do you think?
Kara

Thanks for replying Kara. Short am nap has never really worked for DD as she hates being woken and then ends up taking a short 2nd nap too. What we were doing was long am nap and a 30 min catnap at about 4pm. The prob is that DD's A time is now 4h minimum, even after a short nap. She can easily do 5h and does lovely long naps of 2-2.5h. So fitting everything in is so hard. She also refuses her CN all the time and if she doesn't have a long A time to bed refuses BT too! I do try to offer the CN everyday but if she takes it her day is at least 13.5h and I think this makes her nights short. Last night was another short night, BT was at 8pm due to CN and then she woke happy at 6.15Am! she sttn though so maybe I shouldn't complain!

It sounds like she wants 1 nap, but isn't quite ready. Even when they take a long nap, OT accumulates.  So you need to throw in some 2 nap days. The nap doesn't have to be 30 minutes though.  Have you tried 15-20?
