Too much salt in cheerios?
« on: April 28, 2011, 16:38:52 pm »
I've heard that cheerios contain too much salt in them to be healthy snacks for babies. Right now I'm giving my 8mo DS cheerios and gerber puffs for finger food snacks. He is currently pretty good at grabbing the cheerios and puffs and putting them in his mouth.  I've tried fruits but because I'm afraid of him choking on them, I've cut them up into tiny pieces. Needless to say it's too difficult for him to grab them. ;)

Are there any other finger food alternatives for 8mo?

I don't know where in the world you are but I've been able to find alternatives to cheerios in the health section of the grocery store or in health food stores.  There are similar cereals that contain less salt and sugar than commercial brands (some brands here are Barbara's whole O's or Nature's Path).  I've also found other kinds that make good finger food, like puffed rice or kamut puffs.  Unsalted rice cakes also make a good finger food.

I'm from Canada too. I'll try to look for these cheerios alternatives. Thanks!
