What probiotic can I give my MSPI DD?
« on: May 10, 2011, 13:48:06 pm »
DD is 7 months old and is MSPI.  She has a hard time with digestion in general as well.  She gets lots of gas that usually only bothers her at night (of course).  My pead said to put her on Biogaia but it says may contain milk protein.  I wanted to know if anyone else knows of one I can use.  I'm in Canada so I can probably get ones available here or in the US.  TIA

Hi! I had the same question and you can look for the thread I think now its on page 2 here. Several probiotics mentioned there. In US I'm buying them on iherb.com or amazon.
HTH :)

Actually I don't know how to ask moderators to make this information sticky. I suppose it can be useful to many moms with MSPI babies...

Can't you get biogia in Canada??

In the UK you can get one called udo's choice, but you can get imported biogia (which is nice as it is a little drop thing).

I gave Udos choice to my DD, but in US (don't know about UK) it contains allergens (traces of milk and soy), so that is why I switched to different one...

Biogaia in Canada used to say may contain traces of milk.  They have since clarified with the manufacturer that it doesn't contain it and so have removed it from the label.

I also found one by Sisu called Baby Bifido.  It is in capsule form and is about a third of the price of Biogaia.  I bought it at Whole Foods for 11.99 for 60 capsules.  I also called the manufacturer to make sure that there is no milk or soy in them.  Today is the first day she will try them so fingers crossed :)

OK. I have a question.  DD has had the probiotics for two nights.  The first night we didn't see any issues but last night she was up so much and was gassy.  She seemed to just want cuddles but would toot a few times every time I picked her up.  She didn't have anything new yesterday (other than sucking on a piece of watermelon for a couple of minutes about mid afternoon).  Is this just a coincidence?

We always felt that they gave Olly gas. However I am in a minority (so many people rave about them) and we never proved it so not sure TBH!

I think they can give gas BUT it's a good thing IMO - it means it's working to push out the bad bacteria in the gut and start replacing it with good bacteria. Some people start with 1/2 a dose for a week and work up from there. And maybe give it in the morning?

I tried that this morning.  I gave it to her with her first bottle and she woke after 45 minutes of her nap.   :(  Not sure if it is because she is rolling all over the place in her crib or not.  She didn't have any gas though so that is a plus.  She has also pooped a ton the past couple of days.  Mabybe that is everything being cleared out.

Can you start with half a dose for a week or so and see if that helps her system adjust more slowly? Pooping a ton is normal and good when starting probiotics!

I'm not sure if I can do a half dose.  It is capsules with powder in them and she is only getting one a day.  She doesn't seem to have any gas today so maybe it has passed.  fingers crossed

You can always open the capsules and give her half one day and half the next. But hopefully it's passed and not an issue!
