45 minute naps and falling asleep during feeding
« on: May 16, 2011, 00:36:16 am »
I'm sorry if this is answered somewhere in the FAQ section. I couldn't immediately see something that covered all my LO's issues.

LO is 3 months old tomorrow. We've been doing EASY for a few weeks and it started off really well. However in the past 3 weeks, he has been refusing to nap for longer than 45 minutes. He's had a couple of longer naps in his buggy after we've been out for a walk but in his cot, it's 45 minutes maximum. I have learned to read his cues pretty well and always have him in his grobag and winding down after I see 2 or 3 yawns or he has rubbed his eyes once. He used to be good at settling himself with a dummy but recently he has been screaming like he's overtired and I've had to use the shush / pat method.

After his nap, it isn't time to feed him so I always try to get him to have another nap but 95% of the time it fails. When it comes to the next feed he will take over half (he's FF now after a diastrous few weeks of BF) and then fall asleep. In one of the BW books she says to try to stimulate the sucking reflex by rubbing the palm and if that doesn't work put him down for half an hour to sleep. As I type, LO is asleep on the sofa mid-feed.

A feed can take an hour to an hour and a half. He has minimal A time then goes for a nap and the whole cycle starts again. I don't want to be relying on walks with the buggy to get one decent nap each day but he desperately needs to sleep during the day as he is so sleepy.

He is sleeping well at night, usually 8 hours, but because our daytime schedule is so random, he doesn't have a consistent bedtime  so he goes to bed anytime between 8pm and 10:30pm. We usually bath around 6 or 7pm.

We don't dreamfeed for the simple reason that he won't do it! When he's asleep, nothing is going to make him suck and the times I have woken him to feed him he has taken his food them vomited.

Can anyone help? I'm at my wits end with the lack of routine and I'm trying so hard to be consistent but feel like I'm bashing my head against a brick wall.
