5 week old fighter
« on: May 21, 2011, 15:43:18 pm »
My 5 week old spirited DD has recently started FIGHTING her naps. She will wiggle and grunt and cry and do everything possible to avoid napping. When she finally does quite down enough for me to lay her down she wakes up almost right away. Sometimes after she gets up at 7 she wont take another good nap until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. She will usually grab 30 minutes here and 10 minutes there but nothing like before. We were on a great 3 hr EASY. I was sick one day and my DH stayed home to "help" and I think ever since that day her schedule has been off. And like they say good sleep begets good sleep and I am starting to see her bad sleeping roll over to her night time sleeping (which she was doing SO good at)..how do i get back on track?

At this young age the most common reason for fighting sleep is actually overtiredness, so the first thing to check is that she's not staying away for too long before you try putting her down for her first nap.

The next thing is to see what you're doing to try to help her sleep. Newborns are often excellent sleepers but around 4-5 weeks old they start to become more alert and then end up actually needing more help to be able to fall asleep.

Swaddling can help, if you're not doing it already. It can really help to control those little arms and legs whose movements may be keeping her from sleeping.

The last question is whether she might be in discomfort. Does she object to being laid down when it's NOT nap time?

If i lay her down to play or do tummy time she doesnt mind for a while (but then gets bored). I can tell shes overtired but It seems like nothing I do is helping.. I love the shh pat method because it definately calms her but when I stop shh-ing she immediately jerks awake. I know sometimes you have to go back and start over once they wake up but I tried doing that and all we did was go back and forth me claming her to sleep and she jerking awake and me caling her to sleep...until it was time for her to eat again. I guess I just gotta stick with it and eventually she will see that I know what I am doing and that she isnt going to miss anything when she falls asleep!

The main thing is to keep the A time short enough. At this age I would try to make sure that she is swaddled and being shush-patted on your shoulder ready for sleep when she has  been awake for no more than one hour. When you shush-pat her in her basket, keep going until she is in a deep sleep.
