Sleeps through the night but dreaded 40mins for naps
« on: May 22, 2011, 19:39:54 pm »
Help!!!!

LO is 13 weeks old on Tuesday, we have been followed EASY for the last 4 weeks. I decided to start following it to try and get in a day routine. Night time has always been good and LO goes down in sleeping bag with dummy asleepy by 7.30pm and sleeps through until 7am!!!!! I know I am very lucky but we have really struggled with day naps for ages. I have tried everything, swaddling, white noise, blackout blinds, the list goes on. We are on a 3 hour EASY and the only real awake time that goes to plan is first thing. I feed LO about 7.15, A until approx 8.15 and then take him upstairs, pull blinds, check nappy, cuddle with dummy in (lights dowm) and then put in cot, with dummy. He usually goes off to sleep fine and then on the dot after 40mins awake! I have tried replacing his dummy, but he just gets angrier and angrier, until he is screaming. I know he is still tired as if I take him out and cuddle, he will fall back asleep on me, however I want to get out of this habit! The lats 2 mornings I have tried to leave him in the hope that he would go back off, however he hasnt which then sets the rest of the sleeps off. It then means he he has been awake an hour from 9, then he feed at 10 and then by about 10.30 he is exhausted, however he goes to bed and awake after 40 mins. By the end of the day he is screaming from over tiredness.

PLEASE HELP, if anyone has any other suggestions I am willing to do anything! I just cant understand how at night he sleeps through without me having to replace his dummy but in the day its a different matter.

Thanks in advance xxx

Babies do sort out their nighttime sleep first (thankfully - as night-wakings are tough!!).  Oliver is the same at the moment (and Murray was the same) - great at night but harder to get to sleep for more than 1 sleep cycle in the day.

I think OT/UT is the key to figure out - it you put them down too late/early they don't sleep well.  Trying to figure out Oliver's A time at the moment but not there yet! Once he is 4 months old I will start consistently getting him onto 4 hour EASY as I am confident doing that as that is when I started with Murray and KNOW it works !.

You can try wake to sleep before the end of the sleep cycle and see if that works (can't remember how late into the sleep you do it though ::) )

Sorry, probably not much help but wanted to reassure you that your LO will get there. If they can do 12 hours at night they know how to get through sleep cycles, so will manage during the day once you figure out the right time to put them to bed ....

You can also do shh/pat, etc etc to get the back to sleep.  I remember having to put Murray down for his nap twice (ie initially and then when he woke) to get him used to sleeping for a full nap length.  Hard-going at the time but worth it long term (Murray sleeps 2-3 hours after lunch still!!!)
L x Having a bw break from 1 Feb 2012 - if you want to get in touch please send me a pm.  I may not be here but you are all in my thoughts xxxx (probably be back some time)

still happily married, just not counting!
