How to get LO to take more from a bottle?
« on: May 28, 2011, 22:10:49 pm »
I EBF but occasionally I'll pump so that DH can give DS a bottle and I can get a little sleep. DS has never drank more than 2 oz at a time from the bottle (he's 12 weeks old). This doesn't seem like enough. When I pump, I can get 3-4 oz from each side, and I usually feed him one side at a time. Last night DH gave DS a bottle at 2am and he was up again hungry at 3am. I think it's harder for him to drink from the bottle than it is from the breast, he's always been a good latcher and an efficient eater. We're still using level 1 nipples, we tried going to level 2 but they were too messy, milk dribbled out of his mouth. Do you think it's time to move up to level 2 anyway? We're using Soothie nipples as these are the only pacifiers he would take and he seems to like the shape of them.

I am popping this over to Bottle feeding for you as there may be more advice there for you. How long have you been giving him bottles for?

I always found that my EBF DS#2 never drank huge amounts in a bottle. I just put it down to him being used to less volume feeds at the breast compared to formula fed babies. It could also be that he's not that keen/used to the teat :-\

We used Breast Flow bottles (especially designed for EBM) and teats and DS#2 got on really well with those although he always drank small amounts.
The first teat size may be too much hard work for him now  - but if the size 2 is dribbling out, that suggests the flow is too fast :-\

I lerant something really cool, if you tap the end of the bottle then continue to take it. Works every time for me  :)

Thanks for your replies. We started giving him a bottle at 6 weeks. He doesn't get a bottle every day, just some days when it works out that my DH can take him for a few hours so I can have some time to myself. Usually it's been in the mornings and DS will get through 3-4 oz spread out over that time. The other night was the first time we tried DH giving him a bottle at night, and needless to say it didn't work out that well since DS was up an hour later, still hungry.
