Milk Intake - Please help
« on: May 30, 2011, 21:51:50 pm »
I have a question about milk intake as the internet is providing me with different answers.

How much milk intake does a baby need from 9-12 months?

On baby whisperer it says 18-24 ounces, but everywhere else it says 24-32 ounces. I am so confused.

Please help as my 9 month old is only getting about 15-18 ounces a day and I want to know if this is enough.

Thanks so much

That is on the low side - are you remembering to include milk sources like cheese, yogurt etc into your totals?

What does your baby eat each day?  Bottles when and solids when -and how much?

I have been told many different things too... everything from a 20 oz minimum to one doctor telling me that milk intake should not decrease when solids were introduced... that would have kept my LO at 30 ozs plus food.  Not gonna happen!

The concern is calcium intake and whether or not baby's diet is varied enough to go without the volumes of formula.

Hiya,

If LO is getting dairy in their diet, and you are mixing some formula into their solids, then it's probably enough  :)

Do you have any concerns about LO not gaining weight / growing? If not then you are doing fine!

My DS takes about 30oz per day but he's MPI so can't have any dairy, and doesn't take much solids yet, having just been through a bad bout of teething  :( Waiting for solids to 'click' with him, it's happening more slowly than for most (due to intolerances, reflux & slow to mature gut)!

Thanks for the info guys. He hates formula. It takes me 30 minutes to feed him 6 ounces. I have to move him around the house, distract him etc.

Here is what he gets:

7am - 6 ounces formula
8am - Breakfast -3 tbsp Oatmeal (called wheat, yougurt, and rasperry but I don't think the yougurt component is signifiicant) mixed with 3 ounces formula and 2 tablespoons fruit

1130 -Lunch - 5 tablesoons veggies or protien and 2 tablespoons yougurt
130- 6 ounces formula

430- Dinner - 2 tablespoons veggies or protein, 2 tablespoons oatmeal (mixed with 2 ounces formula), 2 tablespoons fruit.
645- 6 ounces formula

Is this enough calcium? Please anyone with any advice would be greatly appreciated.

He is 9.5 months. He is about 22 lbs, but has been for the past two months since he started crawling. He is very active...walking very soon.

Thanks for the support

For sure it is!  Formula intake alone is around 23 ozs.

Have you tried switching formulas?  Which do you use now?

Is it safe to say that the minimum per day inclusive of dairy in food should be about 20 ounces?

I give
-18 ounces formula (bottle)
- 5 ounces formula (in oatmeal)
- 2 tablesppons yogurt

I guess you're right Kara. Thank you so much. I never thought about the formula in his oatmeal or the yougurt.

I use Similac advance. I BF until 7 months and then used Good Start which he did not like then I switched to Similac. Should I switch again?

20 ozs is the minimum for formula :)

You could try switching again... they all have a slightly different flavour... Maybe give Enfamil a shot?

That looks perfect for his age / weight / activity levels  :)

No need to worry!

Hope he likes the new formula  :)

It used to take my LO forever to finish a bottle.  I was going to switch formula but then someone suggested I try a fast flow nipple and it helped a lot! It wasn't that he didn't like the formula he was just getting bored.  Now it takes him 10 minutes to finish a bottle.
