Bottle help needed:-(
« on: June 05, 2011, 05:56:35 am »
Hi,
my little boy is almost 5 months and has been breastfed until about 2 weeks ago. He got a nasty cold and started refusing to breastfeed, he would scream until I gave up. I started to express but it became really difficult so I introduced formula. He took to it fine but started to get really windy so I changed to NAN HA he seemed to drink really well but is still having problems with wind. I'm not sure if it's bad timing but he slept really well up until the cold with only one wake up between 4 and 5. Now however, he can be up several times a night. He always seems to wake at 2am but will resettle after he has passed wind. Sometimes he will keep waking. I don't feed him at all during the night I just resettle with a dummy, he doesn't normally take one but will at night as it helps with the wind.

Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated! I need it :0)
Thanks
Tania

How much is he taking at a feed, which bottles and teat flow are you using? Have you tried anything for the gas like gripe water (we have Infacol in the UK, you may have something similar where you are) at all?

Hi,
he normally takes about 5/6oz and I am using the Dr Brown Bottles with their regular teat, I used to express the last feed and use an Avent bottle but they made him windy so changed to the DrBrown and have stayed with them. With the gripe water, when should I give it to him? He has a feed before bed at 7 and then a dream feed at about 10:30. We have infacol, I used it when he was little and have actually just given him some tonight. It's hard to know when you are forming habits!
Thanks

You could try the next teat size, if he is still on the first flow he could be taking in more air if it's not fast enough for him - if memeory serves Dr Brown's do 1,2,3 and Y cut teats. I would try the Infacol for a week or so to see if it helps before anything else - you do need to give it with every feed as it has a cumulative effect and needs to build up to work properly.

Does he have any symptoms of reflux or food intolerances at all? That can make then very windy. I don't know what your fomula is - is it a hypoallergenic one?  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0

That's a good idea, I will have a look and get the next size. He has reflux and is medicated but has never really had problems during the night for some reason it was mainly during the day, he would very rarely be sick at night. I think because he is still in bed whereas during the day he is a real fidget.
Yeah the NAN HA is hypoallergenic, I wasn't really sure where to start with formulas as there is very little information over here.

I have not long started him on solids, he seems to love food, I did cut back to see if it made a difference but there was no change. He normally has organic baby rice, pear, mango and pumpkin. That's all I have tried so far.

You could also try cutting out the rice  - it's very hard to digest and can be responsible for wind, they don't really need rice cereal and there are other grains you can give instead. I would drop the rice for a week or so and see if it makes a difference, if not then reintroduce it.

What medication is he on, how much and what is his weight?
