planning ahead for weaning - thought about BT
« on: June 10, 2011, 17:38:21 pm »
Hi all -- DS is 9.5 months - I am still doing 4 feeds a day (I am pregnant and feel I am not producing as much because of that, so I kept 4)  can someone fill me in on how you typically drop feeds?  I imagine by 10 month 3 feeds, then 2 by 11?  then anytime after 12 months.  I love to nurse, but am not producing much, so feel like 12 months will be the end for me.  plus, I want him off before the baby comes so there is no jealousy (not one for tandem nursing)

that is my first question - ALSO, we have been doing a feeding at bedtime - its basically a huge part of the wind down routine.  he doesn't fall asleep nursing....but pretty close, then I hold/rock him for no more than 5 min. and is usually still in my arms - eyes open/shut.  so....I am concerned about a new bedtime routine without nursing!!!  This will definitely be the last feeding we drop, but any advice would be great!

Hi there,

My two basically self-weaned.

The first feed I didn't offer/didn't refuse was the mid afternoon one - I offered a snack and with spiriteds, they were much more interested in the snack at this stage of the day than a cuddle with mammy. (DD needed the darkness of a blacked-out bedroom to eat well at all, from 3 mths so even trying to feed her in the living room at this age was pointless anyway).

I had already dropped the 11am feed in favour of a big lunch at 7.5-8mths anyway and kept the DF as the 4th (or now 3rd) milk feed once the 3pm was dropped - so we were doing 7am, 3pm, 7pm, 11pm at 8 mths, then dropped the 3pm one at 9.5-10mths (Oscar dropped it suddenly, Emma couldn't make up her mind), then the DF at 10-10.5 in Oscar's case and closer to 11mths in Emma's. I'm not someone who believes BF babies can make it thro the night without any milk for 12 hrs so I waited till they were on 3 square meals before trying it out ;-)

7am and 7pm I was willing to keep until they were no longer interested....and I did. They did the rest themselves ;-)

thank you for all that detail!!!  so helpful! :)  DS is also not a great eating during the day.  he takes a good long morning feed - but the daytime feeds are constant on/off the boob, looking around etc.  little stinker.  He is very good at eating solids. I like the snack replacement idea.
