5 month old waking every hour
« on: June 20, 2011, 12:54:03 pm »
My DS2 is just over 5 months old, has reflux and suspected MSPI, and has started waking up every hour through the night...starting an hour after he goes to bed (7pm)....in the past i generally will feed him around 10ish, and then when he wakes again around 3am, however the past few nights because he has woken so frequently i am not sure what to do???!! Any suggestions??

thanks

Does he seem to be in pain? hungry?
Can it be that the room is too warm or to cold?

Its so hard to know what the problem is. He definitely seems to be uncomfortable, squirmy, but I don't think its hunger as when I fed him throughout the night last night he didn't eat much at all. Hes on meds that should be controlling his reflux, but I just don't know. With such little sleep at night he is a bear during the day and it seems to be a vicious circle!
Im going to by a fan for his room today to see if that might help as well....not sure........

What is he on for the reflux?  Special diet for MSPI?

What is his EASY like.  Can you post it in EAS format?

he is on prevacid 15mg solutab, ranitidine 0.8ml three times a day (and was on domperidone but now discontinued) He no longer screams after he feeds when he burps/spits up, so im thinking the acid is taken care of. Also just saw the pediatrician and there is no room to incr his meds. He is now on Neocate formula for MSPI, and this has improved his feeds, as he was screaming during every feed prior to the neocate, (tried regular, soy, Nutramigen etc) and now will drnk most of the time easily, so that is a relief.

Easy is:
6:30-7 -E
7-830-9 -A
830-1030 S

1030- E
1230-1 A
1-3ish S

300 E
330-430 A
430-5 catnap
5-630A (bath, may give 2 oz to tide him over)
630 E
7pm B

i leave him until he wakes to eat again I was doing the dream feed but he wouldn't eat enough to last very long and/or it was disrupting his sleep anyway and would wake around 2. The past 5 nights however he has gone to bed and woken an hour after and then every hour through the night basically. Im not sure whether its a routine thing (i thought we had a pretty good routine) or if its reflux/pain related. He was sleeping fairly well, have gotten 6.5 hour stretches from him at points....

What are you doing with the NW? Are you feeding him, shh/pat him? Does it take him long to fall asleep again?

We get wakings every hour for either pain or when I try to not feed and there is genuine hunger.

This time can be a very difficult time for reflux.    A lot of LOs experience discomfort through the 6 month mark.

Any chance he is teething?

thank you for the replies.,..i am not feeding him everytime he wakes...generally will offer a bottle twice through the night. I try to shh/pat but if hes too ballistic i have to pick him up and pat his back...i also don't want to let him scream for long periods of time in the middle of the night as I have a 2 1/2 year old as well :S

i was thinking as well he may be teething as he is chewing opn his fingers a lot however hasn't responded at all to any type of pain med...so not sure. I can't see/feel anything as of yet.
will continue on, and hope it gets better! thanks

That does sound like pain.  What teething meds have you tried?

all i have tried is tylenol. Last night was a bit different as he woke only every 2-3 hrs, and his cry has changed from a scream to an actual cry...not as high pitched and shrill...not really sure what thats all about.......

Ibuprofin works best for us when teething.  Tylenol does nothing.  Since Ibuprofin can upset refluxers, I give it with the last milk feed.

If it helps even a little, then I know it is teeth.  I will give it for a few nights and then try a night without it. If we have a night of screaming pain without, I give it again.  I don't like giving it all the time either.  Yet, i don't want a screaming baby.  KWIM?  So I give it if he is in pain.
