Very windy/gassy baby??
« on: June 27, 2011, 01:22:06 am »
Please can someone help, I am running out of ideas.

DS is 8weeks old and is full of wind and it is making him very uncomfortable and he isn’t sleeping. He is a reflux baby (but it is wind that is the problem not the reflux) and is EBF.

I do the following:

-give him infacol for every feed both day and night
-Feed so his head is higher than his bum
-Stop and wind him every 5minutes or so while feeding
-Keep him upright after his feeds
-I massage his tummy at least 3-4 times a day
-Lots of tummy time when we can get it in
-gripe water/wind drops when he won’t shift his wind
-he will take a dummy but sometime I wonder if this makes the situation worse. But it is screaming blue murder without it.
-Deep baths (this works well when he is upset)

Nothing seems to help and by the end of the day he is beside himself, because what he hasn’t managed to burp out is sitting low in his tummy. I just don’t know what else I can do to help him. He is constantly farting and sometimes they are really smelly.  While he isn’t constipated he only poo’s every 3 or 4 days, which I am sure isn’t helping matters.

Does anyone have any ideas
 ???

He might have an allergy   :-\  Have you thought about eliminating dairy?

I had thought of that but I don't really eat much dairy to begin with, but I guess it is probaly indirectly in alot of things that eat.

If you don't eat much anyway, it wouldn't hurt *too* bad to eliminate it and see if it helps.  It does take a good 2 weeks to get out of your system though.  Also, a majority of those with milk protein allergies are also allergic to soy (this is the case with my DD).  Just something to keep in mind.  You may choose to take both out of your diet, then if symptoms improve, you could try introducing soy again.  Or, you could just eliminate dairy, and go from there.

It seems overwhelming at first, but there are so many products and substitutes out there.  YOu do have to read labels, tho.

So many (hugs) to you.  My DD had reflux and is allergic to dairy, soy, and wheat.  It's so hard to see them uncomfortable and in pain.

I agree - eliminate dairy and soy and see if he's better after 2 weeks.

He sounds exactly like DS at that age, who has MPI (don't know about soy as we don't have it because I'm intolerant).

The sooner you get to the bottom of it the better  :)

Eliminate chocolate from your diet too. A chiropractor might also help (that's what I've been doing.)

Hi, If you have tried everything else then I think it would be worth taking ALL dairy out. Even a 2 week period should give you some improvement and then you can decide whether to carry on - it can take up to 4 weeks or more for his gut to heal.

How's your latch? Might be worth getting a bf councillor to check it? I put the light on for night-time feeds so I can check DD2 is latched on properly or I will pay for it later!

My 5 week old has the same problem. My doctor suggested trying Biogaia probiotic drops. It's a natural over the counter product. You can get it at Costco or other pharmacies by special order. It's expensivearound$30 for a small bottle but worth it. My daughter screams in pain from9pm-12am everyday due to gas and this has helped her quite a but. It also makes her more regular . From no poos for2-3 days to 2 poos every other day

Do you have a fast let down, if so it may be a foremilk hindmilk in balance.  Too much lactose from the foremilk causes bad gas. You could try pumping for a couple of minutes before feeding, this has help my 4.5 month Old son.  Also a lot of burping, and bicycling his legs.  Also I agree, no soy and dairy or gassy foods.  We also use Biogaia, it dies help if you also take Probiotics.  We are still struggling with bad gas, but if I find anything else that works I will let you know.
All the best
Blessings
