Can't get more than 3 hours at night
« on: June 30, 2011, 14:28:14 pm »
Hi all.  I'm new to this forum, but read the BW books before LO's birth and have been on EASY since day 1.  Sorry about this, I'm sure this question has been asked before, but since I can't search the forum right now, I'll ask it anyway way.

My son is 7 weeks old now and I was expecting his night sleeping to begin stretching out more by now.  Obviously I don't expect him to be sleeping 7-8 hours now, but I'd love to get at least 4 at a time!  Tracy's books indicate that we should be moving towards longer stretches at night.  DS does really well on easy during the day.  He is on a 3-hour schedule.  Exact times vary, but he wakes, eats quickly (10-15 mins - he is a very efficient eater) then he stays up for about an hour and a half, then sleeps for about an hour and a half.  At night though, he still tries to stay right at 3 hours.  He goes down well for naps and at night with swaddling and a pacifier, but how do I go about getting him to try going longer at night?  I've tried the sh/pat for the last several nights to try to extend his sleep, but it doesn't seem to get him to go back down and I feel like I'm patting my arm off!  As soon as I stop patting, he's back up.  Last night was slightly better; he fell back asleep for 45 mins (which is when I found the forum online!)  I'm pretty sure he's not that hungry at night.  Sometimes he'll take a full meal, but other nights he'll just suck for 5 mins and then back to sleep.  I have a few weeks before going back to work, but I'd like to get this squared away soon rather than later.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks for your assistance!

Don't worry, the long stretches will come :)  At 7 weeks it's normal for LO to be eating at night like you describe.

While I do realize it's normal for him to wake up in the middle of the night.  I'm still pretty sure he's waking up out of habit and that he doesn't need to be waking up then.  I follow his cues during the day, and because of that I've seen him stay awake for 2.5-3 hours during the day, and then nap for 2 hours.  Yes, that's abnormal - but he doesn't yawn, or indicate he's tired until then, and I don't put him down until he asks to go down.  I know that he can go 5 hours without eating, he just doesn't at night.  He wakes up every night at 3:30.  We are not on a 7-7 schedule, we are on a 9:00 schedule, so our dream feed is at midnight, not 10:00.  He falls back to sleep at 12:30, and wakes up within minutes of 3:30 every night. Most often at 3:30, he doesn't take a full feeding.  He only eats for 5 mins and falls back asleep.  Occasionally he'll take a full feed, but not often.  Because he only eats a little bit at 3:30, he's up again at 5:30 to eat instead of 6:30.  He'll take a full feed at 5:30 or six, and fall back asleep at 6:30 until 8.  Then at 8 he's had enough sleep for the day, but, he's not really hungry for his am feed b/c it's only been 2 hours since he last ate.  My problem is that I just don't know how to go about getting rid of that 3:30 feed.  He's too young for PU/PD, and because it's at 3:30, I really don't want to try Wake to Sleep because then I need to be up at 2:30.  Is there anything else I can do to help him sleep through that 3:30 mark and start waking up when he's hungry instead?

Right, but just because he can go 5 hours between feeds doesn't mean he should. LOs need a certain number of calories in a day and what they don't get during the day, they will wake for at night. I would also really urge you to move to a 7-7 or 8-8 EASY. Babies have a natural bedtime somewhere between 7 and 8, and 9 is quite, quite late.
