DS 20months suddenly not sleeping independantly?
« on: July 03, 2011, 14:09:49 pm »
Hello
My DS is 20months and last week he suddenly stopped going to sleep independantly. He went from normal betime/naptime routine one day to not wanting to go to sleep the next day. Our bedtime routine is a bath, milk, 3 books, 3 songs and then I put him into his cot and he grabs his stuffed dog and waves me goodbye as I leave without a cry. He sings himself to sleep and that takes about 15mins. He has been perfect like this everynight for the last 6-9 months. His naptimes are very similar but without the bath.

Is this just SA? Is this just getting those back molars (he has all the others)? I assume that I should keep with the WI/WO but am just checking. I have been doing WI/WO and this is generally sucessfuly but sometimes he is very wound up and really does not want to take a nap. I think he is just having too much fun and doesn't want to stop. But the change is so sudden. I would welcome any thoughts.

Our routine is below:
7.00 (later on weekends) wake up and milk
7.45 breakfast
10 snack
12 lunch
1 nap (1 hr at nursery 3 times a week and 2-3hrs at home, especially after nursery days)
3pm wake gently
3.30 snack
5 teatime
7 bath
7.30 stories and milk
7.45 bedtime
8 asleep

Thanks
Kelly

Hi there...

When a routine suddenly changes then it does usually point towards something like teething going on. Around your DS's age can be a key time for 2nd year molars coming through (although you might not be able to see anything.....they can take ages to come through!).

Have you tried giving meds 20 mins or so before sleep to see if this helps? Teething can also increase SA.

What are his night silk once he goes to sleep? Any NW's/EW's?

DS did this to me about a month ago...he did it for several nights...I had no idea why...then he suddenly stopped. Then a few days later his molars came through... so hopefully it is teething. Try the meds and see if that helps...!

thanks for these reply's. The frst thing i tried was meds, i am not shy to give him something if he asks for it or I think he needs it. The have helped a bit but he is still doing it and he is definately not teething at the moment.
We is a great sleeper at night, no EW of NW.
I have been thinking it is perhaps SA brought on by teething. I have been trying to explain to him that although I am not in the room, I am very close by. He used always use the stuffed dog to sleep, but when this disturbance has occurred has has rejected it and if I give to him like normal he thwors t out of the cot. If I just leave it there he will eventually take it and it helps him go to sleep on his own.
He is getting better, it only took 2  WI/WO, last night. A result!
Thanks very much.

If WI/WO is working for you then great, the key is to be consistent & stick at it.....things will get better!

If it is teeth/SA then it will be a phase that passes.
