When to breastfeed and give solids - 6 months
« on: July 19, 2011, 13:20:41 pm »
DD is 6 months and started on solids at 4 months following HV and Doc advice. She really loves the solids and is now having them three times a day, usually one hour after BF. For months she has not been good at nursing in the day, gets too distracted and seems to make up for it at night. Now she really seems uninterested in BF in the day and I am not sure if my routine is right. Couple of questions 1 - should I offer her more BF a day, if so when (she seems happy on every 4 hours though)? 2 - should I try giving her more solids before bed at say 6pm? 3 - should I make bedtime later, say 7/730pm?
EASY
Wake 7am
E 730am BF breakfast at 830am
A
S 9.15am (usually 45 min)
A
E 11am BF lunch at 11.45am
S 12 -2pm
A
E 3pm BF Solids at 4pm
A
S 4.30pm 30/45 min
A
E 6.30pm final BF then bed

She only nurses for a max of 5 mins in the day. She wakes often at 10pm, 1am and 4am

Thanks and look forward to your advice

Hi there,

To answer your questions:

1) No I would not offer more daytime BFs, every 4hrs is appropriate for her age
2) I would also not offer her solids before bed, she is getting plenty with 3 meals per day
3) I would try bedtime at 7pm

Your routine looks pretty textbook for her age.  5min BFs could be normal for her, my LOs were only feeding 5min at a time at that age and were getting enough milk.  The NWings could be related to something other than hunger, like teething, or perhaps she is having a growth spurt.  You could try posting on the nightwakings board if you have more specific questions about them.  :)
