At almost 7 months do I start with a DF?
« on: July 21, 2011, 12:19:03 pm »
Hi everyone,
I have an almost 7 month old daughter. She was exclusively breastfed until 6 months. The I started with solids and formula as I will go back to work.
She is not that interested in solids.
For formula she is not taking what she is supposed to, for the moment Im with 3 bottles and 1 brestfeed. She has been waking up around 5 (when I was breastfeeding she woke up earloer to eat). So when she wakes up at 5 i breastfeed and she goes back to sleep. Today she was up at 7 and at 7.15 I offered a bottle. She took 120ml. Then aT 11 she took 160ml and I offered solids but ahe didnt want. I will offer again a bottle at 3 and I think she will only take 150 ml as usual. At night I will brestfeed but as I start feeling that i dont have that much of milk, i will ofer a bottle.
My question is, as she is not drinking that much, do I give a DF? To try to have her to drink more?
Or do I only offer 3 times a day, to try to get her to drink more?
Im really desesperate, as she is not drinking that much and solids are not that interesting for her.
Thanks a lot for your advices

I wouldn't start a DF now, she's at the age when you are looking to drop it really.

I'm sure she didn't take much at the 7.15 bottle because she only ate 2 hours earlier. Have you got her on a fast flow teat? Can you post your whole day so we can see what is going on.

So
Eat - what times and how much
Activity - how long for
Sleep - what times and how long for.

If she eats at all over night make sure you include that info too!

Hi Laura,

Our routine is as follows:

E 7.00am (started yesterday with bottle) 120ml. I takes her around 35min or so, as she takes around 90ml at firt, then she burps and then again. at a point that she doesnt want anymore.
A 7.30-9.30
S 9.30-11.00
E 11.00 bottle 160ml, took 40min. I sat there to see if she wanted more, but she didnt want and she seemed to me she was full.
E around 12 took 1tsp of spinach puree, didnt like it and she didnt want more (that was today)
A 12 - 1.30pm
S 1.30pm - 3 pm
E 3 pm bottle, usually she takes 160 ml
E 3.40pm fruit, takes around 4 tsp
A 3.40pm - 5.20pm
S 5.20pm - 6.00 pm

Bath at 6.30pm
Breastfed at 7pm and at 7.30pm she is in bed.

I havent used a fast flow teat, I will try at 3pm.

For the BF at 7pm I will complement with Formula, as I can see that my breast are going down.

Since 1 week she has had NF around 4.30 or 5 am. I BF. I know at 7 am will not be that long since I fed her,
but Im afraid that if she wakes up at 7am and I dont feed her, then the whole EASY will be wrong and then before BT maybe she wont be that hungry.

When I was exclusively BF she woke up around 2am and then around 5.40am more or less, now it seems she sleeps more.

What do you think?

Definitly try a faster teat, she is taking a long time to feed. Ideally a bottle feed should take around 20 mins at the most really - did she take a long time at the breast?

Hi Laura,

For the bottle of 3pm, I tried the fast flow teat, and no change. She drank 120ml an hour later I gave her half of a banana.

Breastfeeding took around 15 to 20 min both breasts.

I really dont know!

What bottle type are you using - have you tried any others with different shaped teats to see if that makes a difference?

Hi Laura,
I bought today A Tomme Tippie bottle. I hope this can make a difference. Im really worried she is not drinking enough.

This morning she took 210, but I think it was because it is the first night she didnt wake up to eat. But then at 11 she only drank 90ml!!! I really hope at 3 she will drink more.

Thanks

That was a good first bottle! So she's had 10oz today so far - that's half of what she needs already!

Was that with the new bottle? If it was stick with it for a couple of days to let her get used to it before you can really see if it's better for her or not.

Hi Laura,

First and second bottle was with Avent. Afterwards I tried the new one and I think she likes it more.
I hope it will work.
Thanks a lot for your help!
