I could use some suggestions please.
« on: August 10, 2011, 03:55:37 am »
DS is having terrible nights. Not all the time tho. He will sleep great for a few days, this last time it was 5 good days. And then he will have 2-3 nights of not sleeping and just fussing all night. This has been going on for a few months now and I cant figure out what the cause is. Since it has been going on for so long, I dont believe it is related to his routine since that has changed a few times in the last few months. He is teething, one top tooth broke through a few days ago, but the other top tooth has not. It is swollen but doesnt look very bad yet. I have medicated just in case, to see if that was the problem but it didnt help at all. I have stopped feeding formula during the night just recently and now give him water. But as I said this was going on even when he was getting formula during the night. I have checked all my records and there is no correlation to how much day sleep, A times or BT that coincide with when this happens. Also, He used to always wake up or get woken up at 7am but recently he has started waking at 6-6:30 and not going back to sleep. I am really at a loss as to what could be going on. And I was hoping someone may have some ideas that I could try. I will post his EAS just in case someone wants to see it. Thank you.

Now.. WU 6-6:30/ Get up 7:00
A time 5 hours
Nap 2-2.5 hours
A time 4hr45min-6 hours.. Sometimes he just isnt tired but it rarely happens that he is up more than 5 hours
Bedtime

I know he is very young to be on 1 nap but I have not seen any sign of him being OT. And the long A's are all his doing. I always put him down when he is tired and sometimes I put him down even if he isnt showing tired signs.

Wow, that's the same routine my 25m old is on! :o  But I know other 9m olds that are LSN and can do it.

I do wonder if it's the teething bothering him.  What's your routine with meds?  We found that giving Tylenol at BT and dreamfeeding ibuprofen 4h later helped get through the night.

What's he like when he's waking?  Sad? Happy?  How long are the NW?  Are they always at the same time?

Last night I gave Ibuprofen 30 min before bed and tylenol about 3 hours later when he woke. Then he woke every 2 hours. The night before he was basically up all night. So no the NW's arent at the same time. If you mean how is he when he wakes at night, sometimes he is just fussing ALOT and routing around in his bed like he is trying to get back to sleep and other times he just wakes crying. When it gets closer to daylight hours ie 5am or later he sometimes wakes and coos to himself. I try not to go to him too quickly but sometimes thats hard to do because his crib is in my room for the summer as his room was just way too hot with no way of cooling it.

Something I forgot to mention.. If I try to soothe him in his crib by putting a hand on him, he grabs ahold and wont let go. If I try to take my hand away before he is asleep he screams. So maybe the problem is SA? But if it is, what do I do? I already spend almost 24/7 with him, play peek a boo and make sure to say bye if I go outside without him.

NWs at different times and acting like he is really sounds like discomfort to me.  Unfortunately meds don't always take away the pain enough to really help.  :(  I would bet that teeth are to blame here.  I think he probably wants you near him to help him feel better, poor guy.  It might just be that time is going to be the most helpful thing.  Hugs, we're in the midst of some developmental stuff over here that I think time is also the answer to and it's really hard!  :(

We seem to get random NW and screaming too at the moment (usually 1 a night) For us it is usually pain/discomfort or cumulated OT or developmental. I think at the moment ours are a bit of all three with moving to 1 nap, teeth moving around and trying to walk. I know M is in a similar boat with the first two. It may be something you have to ride out until he is more settled into your 1 nap routine.

Is he settling on his own at BT at the moment hun?

He has been on 1 nap for 25 days now so he should be used to it by now. He does settle on his own and since I started just leaving a bottle of water in his crib at night he has done better, but still waking quite a bit. Last night I heard him a few times. He would cry out just once then settle back down. But he is waking too much and not getting a really restful night.

He may be hungry still.  Could you give him 1 NF and see if that helps the other wakings?

You could also be getting accumulated OT from the 1 nap if he wasn't quite ready...

He doesnt act OT at all, heck 1/2 the time he doesnt even act tired. But Like I said in the original post, this has been going on for months, long before he even moved to 4hr A's. I think it all started when he hit about 6 months. Before that he used to sttn. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out anything that has changed since that time. And I was feeding him but it wasnt helping. I just quit the night feeds this last week. But like last night I did give him a bottle of formula at 4am. That was the one time he actually cried out for me instead of just fussing. I'll be happy when the other top tooth comes in and I can finally figure out if it is the teething bothering him. But who knows, by the time this one comes in he may have another one moving.

Did he start solids at ~6 months? Do you think there could be an intolerance or digestion issues affecting his tum at night? A lot of babies cant have heavy meals in the evenings and do better with their big meal at lunch ie meat etc.

He actually started solids right around 4.5 months with cereal before bed. But you may be onto something. I have been giving dinner about an hour before bed. Tomorrow I will try giving it about 2 hours before bed and then a small snack closer to BT
