Should I introduce solids now?
« on: August 10, 2011, 13:00:56 pm »
Our son is 4 1/2 months - weighs 18 pounds (was 8,07 lbs at birth) and is exclusively breastfed.

He used to sleep through the night, but for the past 2 weeks, he wakes up crying between 2 and 3am. Paci, shh/pat won't work, he only falls alseep after being fed.

Should I introduce solids at this point or still wait until he is 6 months old?

It could be a growth spurt.  Personally I would wait until 6mos to make sure his digestive system is mature enough to tolerate solids.  :)

I agree with Martina.  Its also not unusual for an  EBF babies need to change at the 4 month mark and need a NF.  I know my DD1 had been STTN and then at 4 months started waking.  We started solids at just over 5.5 months.

If he's taking a full feed and going back to sleep after I would assume he's hungry and just feed right away.

Thanks!! :) I wasn't sure what to do... I purchased organic whole grain rice cereal & also oatmeal... just in case! But I had read that it was better to wait until he was 6 months. We will get used to his "new" routine and 3am feedings ;)

Hi, I also agree, we experienced this at 4 months too. Do you do a dream feed already?

Yes, we have been doing the dream feed between 10-11pm every night since he was 10 weeks old. But for the past 2 weeks, he has been waking up at approx. 9h30-9h45pm to eat. The dreamfeed is a little earlier than usual... and he wakes up around 1am (paci + shh/pat) and goes back to sleep until approx. 2h30am (eats at that time) and goes back to sleep until 7h30am.
