would this affect my supply?
« on: August 23, 2011, 23:21:59 pm »
Last night rather than breastfeeding LO I gave her a bottle of expressed milk at 7pm and did not pump until 11:30pm. Tonight when I breastfed her at 7pm she cried almost immediately and only fed for about 5 mins. I pumped and got less than an ounce from both breasts. I'm wondering if pumping later instead of when she had her 7pm feeding has caused this issue. Anyone else experienced this? How can I build up my supply for her evening feed again?

Hi there,
I doubt it that a one off would have such a drastic impact on your supply. (Usually what I found wa that if I left to pump later I would get full and uncomfortable).
Have you been having concerns about your evening supply? (before this?)
xx

Recently she's been fussing during each feed and I've been having low supply. I am going to try pumping an hour after each feed or immediately after each feed to increase my supply.

I have heard from Le Leche that your greatest supply is in the morning.  I always found this frustrating since my kids always had cluster feeds at night!!!

I think pumping right after feed is best it sends a message that more is needed at next feed.

Hugs!  I hope it works out for you.

Agree with pp. And tbh, if you are concerned about your supply the best thing to do is to BF, as often as your LO needs/ wants, and add a few pumping sessions straight after.

One of the reasons lo's cluster feed in the evening is the naturally lower supply.  Prolactin peaks between 4-7 am, and is lowest between 4-7pm (ish).  As Tay says, demand feeding is best for supply and best for baby - it sorts itself out.

Also make sure you are taking a break and getting fed/hydrated in the afternoon - often it is a busy/stressful time, and it is good for mom and her milk to slow down and put your feet up!  One day off schedule should not affect your supply unless compounded by a change in diet/medication/illness, etc.

Also be aware of hormonal changes - even if you don't have your period back yet, your hormones may fluctuate during the month.  if you do have your period back, then the week before and/or during can be a time of lower supply.  Taking calcium+magnesium during that time period helps a lot.

I found that pumping in the morning (when I had a bigger supply) and giving a bottle of that EBM as well as BFing at night worked wonders for me. I had an oversupply and DS didn't really have to work to get the milk - it usually just poured (rather than squirted) out into his mouth and he just had to swallow. He didn't like to work at night when he was tired, so I just fed him both breasts til he was grumpy and then gave him the EBM to finish the feed.

You're also at that 4m growth spurt stage, so often confused with low supply.  If you can, feed feed feed rather than giving top ups right now.  Supply will sort itself out.
