dropping night feed - need help
« on: August 31, 2011, 13:08:09 pm »
Hi,
I have a nearly 6 month old dd who's been on a very regular routine of a DF at 10:30pm, and a night feed at 3:00am, followed by a wakeup at 6:30/7:00am.
The other night she STTN without any intervention.  So last night I decided to drop the NF cold turkey.
My question is this: what do you do with a 4 am - 5:45am off/on cry/quiet, awake/asleep?  When do you just feed and start the day.  It keeps going quiet in there, so I've been holding out a little longer (I was in the room before, now I'm writing this and it just hit 6am).
DD is a thumb sucking self soother.  She does not really respond to shhing/patting, I haven't really persisted with PU/PD as we haven't had the need.  She honestly seems to do better with me leaving the room and she flips and flops around the crib and settles herself.
If she wakes during a nap, or has trouble at bedtime, we go in and out to check, but it never helps to PU.  DD1 was the same.
Well, it's now 6:05am so I figure I'll feed the next time I hear her, but I guess I'm just wondering when an NW becomes an EW?

Here's out EASY
7:00am awake and feed
9:30-11:30 nap, then feed
1:30-3:30 nap, then feed
5:30-6:00 cat nap
6:30 bath
7:00 feed and to bed.

By the way, dd is exclusively BF, and we're starting solids today most likely.  Have the cereal ready to go.

I would think she is hungry at that 4 am time and you could feed and put her back down until 7.  In other words, treat that 4/5 am wake up like a NW.

After STTN independently one night, we decided to drop the night feed and carry on with sleep training as per Tracy's method's if dd didn't do it on her own.
This is what's happened.
night #1 - awake 4:30-6:00 off and on, then slept until 7:30 - no night feed (this is the night I posted about)
night #2 - STTN, awoke at 6:30 - fed and to sleep until 7:30 - no night feed
night #3 - STTN with the exception of 30 min of fussing 4:30-5:00.  Then slept until 8:00 - I woke her to start the day - no night feed.
So I think the unsettled time is a normal transition to fully sleeping through the night, and dd is doing marvelously.  I could've carried on the night feed indefinitely - I'm sure dd would not mind in the slightest!
For a younger baby, yes I agree with the pp, but for my chunky 20lb 6 months old, I'm quite sure she's ready to skip a night meal, as illustrated by her starting it.
We've begun solids today, and once they are established, I plan to use the gradual wean method of bringing the dream feed earlier until it is eliminated as well.
This is what worked for dd#1, and so far dd#2 is a picture of our first in terms of temperment, sleeping and eating habits.  Both are angel babies.

Follow-up - We are now on night #6 of no night feed.  Each night has been better, and last night dd only gave a single squawk at 3am and slept from 7:30-7:30, with only a DF at 10:30.
