17 month old sudden NWs
« on: September 01, 2011, 12:09:09 pm »
Ok.... so I have been waiting for over a week now thinking that things will get better but noooo..... it continues....

My 17month old DS has started NW over the past week and that too at the same time.... somewhere between 11 and 12 every night. He has his canines coming and I was wondering if that could be the reason... but how come it starts paining every day at exactly the same time. Once he wakes up, it could take anywhere between 1-2 hours to settle him  :-\... me and my DH are so tired at this point, so now have come looking for some tips that could help us settle him.

For a day or two we gave him a bottle and then stopped it, thinking that we are unnecessarily introducing a prop here. He also came into bed with us for a day or two since we gave up after 2 hours of trying to put him back into his cot!! But since the last 3 nights, we are consistently sitting with him in his room, giving him water (if he asks for it) and soothing him to go back to sleep. He might doze off in our arms but the moment we put him back into his cot, he is wide awake and crying hysterically. The reason why we thought it could be teething is coz he arches himself as he cries, probably with the pain.

I read on one of the posts regarding DF meds. Is that advisable? I would be scared of that since I would be afraid I might choke him or something. He has mostly been very good and predictable (except at around 10 months or so when he had started waking up atleast 7 times at night and thats when I read the BW book).

Any advice would be most appreciated. Am ready to try anything at this point just to get a few good hours of sleep.

Thanks! :)

That definitely sounds like canines to me.  We are having the same issues, and had them as well with DS1.  It sucks!  Are you giving meds before bed?  Because you wouldn't need to try a DF meds before then if you give them at bedtime.  Ibuprofen is usually effective for 6-8hrs, so you can give them at bedtime and then they won't wear off until later in the nights.  Sometimes that is enough to get them through, other times they may need another dose in the middle of the night.  I have never tried the DF meds, was going to last night but chickened out!  :P

Ah, feel a bit relaxed to hear that I am not the only one who is going through this... Have not tried giving him meds at bedtime as yet but was thinking of doing it tonight... DS goes to bed at 7.30/8 and this doesnt seem to bother him until between 12 & 1, thats why was thinking of DF meds :D... I totally understand why you did chicken out last night... I would be the same :D

Thanks so much for your support... will let you know how I get on.

Usually what happens is they go to sleep fine and sleep a good stretch in deep sleep, but then notice the discomfort upon entereing a lighter phase of sleep. But often teeth affects them in funny ways. Like right now my ds2 will sttn but wakes between 5:30-6 habitually, which I know is due to teeth even if I can't put my finger on why! Two nights ago he woke from 11-12, so last night I gave meds before bed which helped. With my ds1 sleep was a total disaster for 6wks while he got his canines!

Well, fingers crossed that it works for us too.... :)

I was just curious and had to click on the links to your blog :) just read the last post you had on your blog. It mirrored the exact emotions that I am going through at the moment, well not with two little ones, but just one. It was quite reassuring in a way that its perfectly normal to snap in the way I did, but I know its not justifiable at all, esp us being the adults and them being so small :( I really worked hard yesterday to keep my cool and not snap at him when he woke up... the poor little thing... and then what makes me feel even more guilty is when he wakes up in the morning and gives me the tightest hug possible and a big smile......

geetha - just wanted to let you know that my DS just turned 17 months and we had been going through the same exact thing on and off for awhile as the canines were coming in.  They have all cut, but the top two are still pushing down into their final position and it has again caused some disturbances.  Agree with trying meds at bedtime.  I tried the meds DF before and I woke him so I never did it again.  I just didn't have the magic touch.  It does work for others though.  I would try BT meds first for sure.

I have snapped in the past too and have felt awful about it, but as Martina said, we are only human and have the toughest job in the world! (((Hugs))) :-*

Thanks so much for the support, Nicole & Martina :)

I tried the BT meds last night. Things are a bit more complicated since my DS has caught a bad cold too since last evening. He woke up about 2 hours after going to bed but just needed a pat to go back to sleep, think he could not breathe with the cold. He woke up once again at 12.55 (just when I thought he might not), was very upset but went back to sleep easily once I went into his room. So its a bit confusing since he was not feeling well as well.. but am going to do the same thing tonight and see how it works.... the swelling on his gums is just horrible... feel so sorry for him :(

Oh poor guy!  A cold and teething, no fun.  :(  You can try a humidifier and saline nasal spray to help with the congestion.

Thanks Martina. Tried a humidifier, baby vicks and bath with some eucalyptus oil in it... cold getting better but DS still not his best. Have been giving him BT meds for the last 3 nights and he woke up once around 1ish but settled back easily enough if I just went in and told him to sleep... Have not given him meds tonight since we didn't feel that he needed it... fingers crossed that all goes well ... thanks so much for your support... was getting to my breaking point but felt good just reading your posts :)

Not sure if I should get myself too excited with this development but DS actually STTN. Went to bed at 8 and did not hear anything through the night and he was up at 6.45 this morning... his cold also so much better so I think that helped too. Canine not through yet but DS is drooling like mad, so hopefully it should be out in a day or two (just assuming this from the upper canine that broke through last month).
