seems to be getting more tired...
« on: October 26, 2011, 23:38:31 pm »
My 5 month old is a LOVER of sleep.. sounds odd i know.. but I know as his mummy that knows things that if he sleeps when he likes he'll just sleep for 40 minutes at a time. SO i have been keeping his A time long and recently stretched it to 2hours 30. Basically as soon as his morning sleep goes to ann hour or less that he needs more time. This is sometimes fine in the morning, other times is REALLY hard. At other ties during the day though he looks as if he could go down after an hour or so!! and can be REALLY grumpy after that. Also- at times he'll even try to put himself to sleep where he is!! He was doing some tummy time the other day after being awake about an hour and a half and decided that was the perfect time to settle in for a snooze! THe kid NEVER sleeps on his tummy!! I thought A time was meant to increase across the day (or stay the same), rather than get less! (I was also under the foolish assumption that mummy still had some chance of running this kid's day!!) Here's his usual EASY:

E: 6:30 (or whenever he wakes us up.. from 6-7.30 usually)
A: 6:30-9:00
S: 9:00-11:30 (usually between 2-3 hours) (except on our 2 hour car trip yesterday where he decided 40 mins was an ideal morning nap!  ::)

E:11:30
A: 11:30-2
S: 2:00- 2:45 (usually between 40mins-50 mins, rarely more than an hour)

E: 2:45
A: 2.45-5:15
S: 5:15-6:00 (will put him down earlier here if he's tired as i only want him to do 40 minutes anyway)

E: 600
A: 6:00-7:00
S: 7:00 (not a minute earlier not a minute later... )

Dream feed at 11 and then usually sleeps right through, sometimes up for a feed 4-5 or so. A few nights he's been waking up before 11 but I feed him then and he goes back down no trouble. Again- as soon as that morning sleep drops to an hour or less, which it does i up his A time. (In the past i haven't and left it about a week and he just keeps going with the shorter nap in the morning... )

HE's also just hit a patch of not being happy under his arch, or in the bouncer, or just on the floor....etc but i guess that;s a phase sort of thing...  ::)

Also- he's a biggish boy and seems to be eating enough. he's also good at letting me know if he's had enough (new trick if mummy pushes the point too far on eating- chomping down on the boobie!  :o  )

Any advice appreciated!

Also (god- you just can't shut me up!!) I'm not really concerned that his other naps in the day aren't that long, just that 40 minute naps have always seemed UT to me and so I didn't think shortening A time would solve things. Also he'd be really hard to get down for a 4th nap in the day.. he seems to know (or mummy can't be bothered...!)

TBH, I don't have much experience in the arena of babies loving sleep, but I can tell you that DS1 (and DS2 is shaping up this way, too) always had decreasing A times throughout the day. The first one would be 2.5 - 3 hours, the second one would be more like 2 and the third 1.5 -2 etc. He did really well with a shifting EASY, so maybe that's something you should try?

sounds like it might be worth a go... it's torture keeping him up when he only does a short nap at the end of it anyway!
