Dressing your older toddler for bed in winter
« on: October 29, 2011, 19:05:08 pm »
What are you doing ladies?? I think we are getting some wake ups due to cold and kicked off blankets - and he will say next day he was cold.

It occur to me that I am nice and snug in my 12.5tog duvet and he is only in a 4tog one (which he kicks off anyway).

Jacob is in a bed, has a potty in his room he uses by himself, and hasn't used a sleeping bag since he was 18 mths old so that is not a solution  :).

Just wondered what others are doing??

Been wondering the same as little miss kicks off her covers and chooses her own PJs which are often short sleeved ::) I'm thinking I might need to get one of those all in one fleecy suits?! Bit ridiculous for a 3 yo mind :P
Ps I'm v impressed he uses th potty alone at night!! Xx

What about the fleece all in one suits? I put those on my two as dressing gowns in the mornings as they don't seem to get cold in bed, Primark do nice cheap and cheerful ones! They do them up to adult sizes so they are definitly not rediculous on a 3yo Charli ;). Don't forget too that they are as warm under their lower tog duvets as we are under high tog duvets because of their body size - providing they stay under them of course ::).

The other thing I do is put the duvet across the bed, (the length across the bed rather than down the bed) so I can tuck one side in really well and there is plenty of length to move around under but it doesn't come off so easily. The width of the duvet is plenty wide enough even if they stretch out.

I had winter sleeping bags for DS. There are up to size 5 years here.

hmm, well we use a sleeping bag b/c I know there's no way that DS is going to keep his quilt on, but you say that's a no go.
I think Claire (clazzat) once mentioned that she had a quilt they you buttoned/zipped up to the sides of the sheet-or something like that. So it wasn't exactly a sleeping bag but it wasn't something her DD could kick off either.
other than that, fleecy pjs, socks, double layer of pjs..

We don't have a long winter here, but we don't have heating so our night time temps can get down to about 8-10C inside the house at night in winter.
2 quilts one length, one width tucked under both sides of the bed helped.
The other thing is children don't have the same theromstats as adults & if they are overdressed in the day they feel the cold more at night... so if you keep to a rule of thumb the opposite to that of a baby (preschooler = 1-2  LESS  layer/s than an adult) they will actually cope with the cooler temps at night. That certainly works really well for my children who sleep in 12-8C temps in boxer shorts & a long sleeved PJ top & live in shorts & T shirts 365 days/year.

I was just going to say that, Masyn is so disappointed her fav old navy ones only come up to size 5 and will probably not fit much longer!  I want fuzzy sleepers!

We have just started putting vests on the boys as it is starting to get a bit colder overnight so they are in vest, long sleeve long leg pjs with duvets that they hardly ever stay under ::) We also have some fleece suits for when it's even colder but they aren't easy to get off for the potty in the middle of the night!!

Our overnight temps dip down to -10F/-20sC and DS's room is in the NE corner of the house -the coldest.  We have had to resort to a radiator style space heater that keeps his room toasty for naps and overnight.  I bought him fleece jammies (two piece) also so he can go potty if he needs to.

Oscar is awful for kicking off the duvet or end up sleeping ON TOP OF the duvet as well.....so he's in the fleecy sleepers. I refuse to buy them here (Mothercare the only option and the tax they put on kids' stuff from abroad here is unbelievable, so a fleecy sleeper would cost around 30 euro for one) so my mammy sends them over from Primark in Ireland as well....

Emma's still in a sleeping bag.

On an aside- do your kids pee in the potty every night during the night? Just wondering as maybe my aim for Oscar to go 10 hrs or more with no pee is a bit OTT? (late bed wetter here, doing 7pm to 12 midnight, then waking himself for a pee, and then midnight to 6am dry).

Jacob often wakes for a pee at about 11pm (so after 4hrs sleep), or else wakes after about 10hrs sleep bursting  :P.

This is spontaneous for Jacob though - he just started to refuse to wear a nappy and he is almost dry anyway.

Thanks for the replies.

I really need fleecy PJs in 2 parts, or thermals. Hmmm mm.

Liz, you could also try a thermal vest under his PJ top (M&S do good ones)...you can get ones that help to regulate their body temp so they don't get too hot or cold.
