Naptime chaos
« on: November 02, 2011, 01:49:13 am »
Hello! I have been following EASY since my son was a newborn. He is 15 weeks old and we still can't get past our 2 HOUR Schedule! I have tried extending his awake time but have had no such luck. After 45mins to an hour he starts to show that he is tired so I bring him to his room and wind him down by reading a story/rocking him while listening to a lullabye. MOST of the time he goes down okay but wakes up 45 mins later. I have tried extending his naps by soothing/rocking him back to sleep but I have been soothing him for an entire wake cycle and he is miserable the entire time. Also if I do get him back to sleep and try to put him in his crib he wakes up and we have to start all over again! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How have you been trying to extend his A time?  It may take a while, but he should be about to do about 1.5-2h of awake time before needing a nap.  I'd try to increase it by 10-15 minutes every couple of days until they're longer.  It sounds like he's waking up early from his naps because he's not tired enough to nap for more than 45 minutes...what's called an undertired nap.  Granted, he may be a developmentally short napper right now, but he should at least be eating every 3.5-4h and should be able to stay up longer than 45min-1h.  If he *does* take a short nap, his following A time would probably be ~1.5h long (meaning that he'd be ready for his next nap then).

I have been trying to extend each of his A times by  reading a book or speaking to him softly but it hasn't been working so great because then he gets overtired and he is cranky and almost impossible to put down. After an hour he seems really tired (rubs his eyes, yawning, buries his head in my chest). Sometimes he can go an hour and a half of A time but very rarely. Should I ignore his sleepy cues? In my experience this made matters worse. Can they show sleepy cues when they are undertired?

45min/1h A times really are too "young" of an A time for age.  I'd really try to start afresh in the morning with that first A time, keep him up for 1h15 (that includes eating, activity time, and wind down)--so he'll need to be asleep at the 1h15 mark.  If he short naps (anything less than 1.5h), I'd only try to resettle with shh/pat for about 20 minutes.  If he doesn't go back to sleep, get him up, feed him and have him asleep at 1h15 A time.  Do this for 3 days.  Then on the 4th day, up his A time to 1.5h and see how that goes.

I think they can show tired cues out of habit.  He might be toucy and therefore needs to extend his A times more slowly, but I definitely think he can handle more.

What is his room like when he's sleeping?  Is it darkened?  White noise?  Is he swaddled?
