If you were me...
« on: December 08, 2011, 14:47:25 pm »
Hello!

I am having an open heart surgery when my son is 20 months old. Considering the scale of the surgery and age of my son, if you were me, would you try hard to keep on breastfeeding or just wean?

Did you or do you know anyone having similar experience?

Please give me some advice!

Is he about 18 months now then?

I would probably wean.   You are going to be in hospital for a bit and recovery period is a good while isn't it so I think it is one less pressure on you.

How often is he feeding now?

You might also be put on some meds that would not be compatible with BFing -- which would force him to wean at that point, so it might be easier to do it when he's not dealing with you not being there for a bit.

I'm now feeding him twice, morning and evening.  And he likes it very very very much.

I'm afraid that you'll have to wean - the drugs you will be given are not compatible with BF, and the stitches will make it impossible for you to feed him!

I agree that it's best to start now, so he's happy to leave you alone before your surgery  :-*

Has the surgeon given you any advice on it?

Depending on how you feel, I can't help thinking it'd be easier on him if you ease off from now so he's more or less forgotten by the time the surgery comes up.  If you leave it much longer, you may find you need to rush weaning and that'll just be stressful for everyone.  Also he'll be a bit confused by you being away (in hospital) and I think having him miss BFing at the same time would be incredibly hard for him and whoever's looking after him.

HTH and very best of luck with the surgery.

Thank you moms! :)

The surgeon, I guess he has no idea about breastfeeding.

Now I think I'll try to wean completely before the surgery.
