Night wakings/ awake 3 hours in night in almost 5 month old!
« on: December 15, 2011, 14:52:43 pm »
Hi!
We have an almost 5 month old (on Dec 21) who has had colic and reflux (on medication). We have done plenty of AP, unfortunately, just to get through the last bit of time. We nursed to sleep, co-slept etc. We recently (5 days ago) started our LO on the 4 hour EASY (which was not a huge jump from what we were doing previously as we already had the same nap routine-- the biggest difference was that I was nursing very frequently about every 3 hours and giving her nips when she would wake from sleep to get her to go back down and now we are just doing every 4 hours!). We EBF.

Our biggest issue right now (and always has been) : night wakings. DD wakes at the 40 min mark in the evenings, invariably, and has for the last 2.5 months. She used to wake every 45 mins in the evening until about 11 but now just has the one wake in the evening. Then she will DF at 10:30 and wake again at 2 am for another feed (she appears famished). Then comes the rough patch--- she will either wake hourly until 6 or NOT SLEEP AT ALL from 2 to 5-or 6am. We have been doing a sh/pat, primarily, and PU/PD if she becomes out of control crying. Looking back on our sleep log-- she has been restless between 3 and 5:30 am since the end of September, and often,  :( , out of my frustration and desperation, I would bring her into our bed for us to sleep. She did not co-sleep at all well though, often very squirmy and wanting the breast continuously.

She does have a lovey and has a noise machine. Her crib is in our room.

Her EAS is: 7 ish Eat
9 ish Sleep This nap can be 45 mins, occasionally, I can extend to 1.5 hours.
10: up/activity if unable to extend nap
10:45 or 11: Eat
Activity : Usually outside for a walk, errands etc.
*Sometimes she falls asleep for 1/2 hour around 11:45 or so.
1:00 Sleep
This nap is usually 1.5 to 2 hours, sometimes 2 and a quarter. I usually have to extend at the 45 mins mark
3 : Eat
Activity:
4:45 or 5: (Watching signs): Catnap
Bedtime routine starts at 6:30 or so: Feed, Bath, Story, Quiet time with music and then in the crib.

We have been seeing huge progress, the first night put down was over 1 hour and 20 mins with lots of crying, and last night it was less than 5 mins with no crying. From 2-5 Day 1: up all 3 hours, Day 2, 3, 4, up at 2, 3:30, 4L30 and 5:30 but able to sleep inbetween (progress). But last night DD was up all 3 hours, unable to be settled.

Is this the 5 day regression? I had expected it to be in the put down but perhaps with us, it is in her most difficult time-- between 2 am and 5 am. Is there any tweaking of her EAS that I should do? Keep going with the sh/pat, PU/PD?

Thanks so much!

Hi there, is the reflux under control now or does your LO still suffer any pain? Are you using PU/PD to get your DD to fall asleep or just for NW? Are there any props going on? Dummy etc?

The reflux appears to be under control.
We do a minimal sh/pat to put to sleep the last several nights. Sh/pat for NW except during feed times and PU/PD only when she is crying out of control. She seems more agitated with the PU/PD.

Soother only occasionally, when the crying escalates. She either spits it out or I am able to remove it when she is very drowsy (so she doesn't fall asleep with it in.)

Last night we had a dinner to attend, and left her with a sitter for 2.5 hours, during which she cried 1.5 hours. :( We could not get her settled at all, despite doing a quick version of our bedtime routine when we were home. She did not sleep until 4:30!
So frustrating that she is not able to adapt!

It sounds like you are doing great hun. I would carry on with the shush/pat if the PU/PD isn't working. It does upset some babies more. Once the shush/pat is working you can try patting less and maybe just resting a hand on your DD's back.
