Pain in breast after stopping BF.
« on: December 22, 2011, 19:13:16 pm »
Not sure if this should be here or in health ???

I finished feeding DD 10 days ago - I was down to one feed a day and had been for 4 days (the second to last feed to go was the DF but she took very little then).

The underside of my left breast is painful to the touch - like it's bruised. I had noticed that it was painful in exactly the same way if I went a long time without feeding at about the beginning of November. But it only started hurting a couple of days ago - more than a week after her last BF.

Has anyone else had this? Or should I be worried? ???

Hiya - a little different as I stopped suddenly after just 3 weeks of BF, but yes I did have pain & a lot of it, for well over a week.  I became heavily engorged & both breasts were red & painful.  I'd say keep an eye on it for signs of mastitis, and if you are at all concerned, please go & see your doctor.

does it feel like you're a bit engorged hun? You do keep making milk for a while longer after you stop bf (I am 4.5m down the line ::)) I didn't get engorged but I'd be down to about 5 feeds per week for a while...

I honestly don't know!!! I'm not sure i've ever been engorged ??? I only ever had 'just' enough to keep her (and DS before her) putting weight on nicely, but no extra yk? Maybe I should pump?

I wouldn't pump! That will only stimulate producing more milk.
Try cold compresses and if it's still like that in a day or so go to the doc just in case it's mastitis.

Do you have any flu likek symptoms? If so that could be mastitis. If not it could just be a blocked duct. A gentle massage of the area might help.

I've got a cold...but just a cold - no fever, chills, aching etc...

I'll try massaging the area - maybe it is something blocked since I stopped. Thanks!

taking nurofen could also help  - its anti inflammatory so will allow any swelling of a duct or tissue to subside.

Hey thanks for checking :)

So against advice I did hand express for a bit - I figured if it was a blocked duct then expressing should help - and it did! The pain went as soon as I expressed so I guess I may have just been engorged. No pain since :) X

I'm happy you're feeling better! :) Sometimes you just have to go with your instincts.
