habiktual, dependency, or plain hunger?
« on: January 04, 2012, 21:21:29 pm »
Hi,
I DF every night at 23:00. for the past week or two my 8 week old has been stirring loadly at 3:00 or 3:20 AM. I put his dummy in (i have to admit rather quickly as he sleeps next to us) and he goes back to sleep immediately for another hour to hour and a half (tried waiting and seeing but always turns into cry). When he stires up again, i put in dummy to go and make bottle  - by the time I come back he sometimes is fast asleep again for another half an hour (not always though) at which point I feed. then he will go on for 2.5-3.5 more hours, when every second or third night he will stir after an hour and dose straight back again with dummy.
i was wondering what the 3:00 AM wake might be? I don't want to deprive him of food if it is hunger or if it is habitual I would like to help him get over it....
any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi there, at this young age I would imagine that it is probably hunger especially if the dummy only settles your DS for another half an hour. Have you tried feeding when he first wakes and see if he then settles quickly after that?

hi
just so i make sure i expressed myself well- at 3 am the dummy helps for about and hour and a half. tonight it settled him for another 1:45 and when he does eat he doesn't take a big feed just an average one.
should I stuill consider this as hunger?

Can you post what times your DS usually wakes at night and what times you feed him for me to take a look at please? I am finding it a bit hard to follow when you are feeding him and when you are using the dummy to resettle, sorry. If you list it all out for me I should have a better idea of what is going on. Thanks.

no worries, I thought I might have made a bit of a mess of it.
DF at 23:00
he usually wakes at 3:00 but overall anywhere between 2:45 and 3:20. I use dummy (sometimes need only once sometimes twice when it falls out a minute or two after).
then he will wake an hour to an hour and a half later. so somewhere between 4:00 and 4:30. This is when I will feed him. I put the dummy in so he won't screem while I am making the bottle. sometimes it sends him back to sleep for another 15 to 30 min - at which pooint I just wait with the bottle next to him and pick up to feed when wake up.
so:
3:00 dummy
4:00 or 4:30 feed.
does this make more sense?
Thanks

Yes sorry was just me not being with it! ::)

Have you tried just feeding when he first wakes around 3am? The fact that an 8 week old is only having one NF is great and I wonder if you just feed then if he would go straight back down for the rest of the night. I would imagine that he is waking because he is starting to get hungry, the dummy settles him for a time but the hunger builds yk? What do you think?
