Lots of sleep issues- help!
« on: January 20, 2012, 05:44:50 am »
Have a 6 month old boy who has never slept well. I'm at my wit's end and need help. Here was our schedule last night:

7pm- 5oz bottle, and sleep. Woke up twice between 7 and 9, I just stuck his paci back in and he was fine.

9:20- woke up and put himself back to sleep- I didn't go in at all. I consider this a small victory.

12-midnight- woke up I gave him a five oz bottle in his crib, went to sleep immediately.

3:45am- woke up screaming! I patted and tried to give him his paci (while in his crib) until 5:00am. Cried continuously...

5am- I nursed him for 5 minutes and put him back in his crib.

Right now it's 8:40am and the little fella is still sleeping!! I don't know what to think about this.

Oh! He just woke up!

Send me and thoughts or advice on what to tackle first. I'd love to get him sleeping through the night without feedings.

Yesterday was not a normal day, since the night before was the first day of trying to spread out his nighttime feedings...

Yesterday- Awake 8:40am Nursed well.

Sleep in his crib with White noise 11:15-12

Ate a bit of rice cereal and apple sauce and 5oz from bottle at noon

Was SUPER cranky and tired until 1:30pm- Napped until 2pm---WAY TOO SHORT!! I tried to put him back to sleep, sometimes I can, but this time I couldn't.

3pm Ate 4 oz from a bottle

Sleep- 4pm to 5:30pm this was his only "good" nap of the day It was really late, so it pushed his bedtime back to 8pm.

Last night was:
He cried less last night.

Here's how it went-

8- 4 oz bottle and bed. He woke up after 45 minutes and we put his paci back in. Slept until 12:30! Yay!

12:30- 5 oz bottle in his bed back to sleep until 3:45am... Cried in bed with Kevin comforting him until 4:30. Went to sleep for fifteen minutes, cried, I put his paci in his mouth and he slept until 5:15.

5:15am- nursed for 5 minutes, passed some gas and went back to sleep until 7:30am!

I think we're getting somewhere...

Today I'm going to try for better naps...

He slept from 9:30-11:50am   Then was up until 2:15 and only slept for 45 min.

How do I stretch the second nap so it's longer?

Looks like you need to extend that second A time, so your day looked like this right?
WU 7.30
A 2 hrs
Nap 9.30-11.50
A 2hrs 20mins
Nap 2.15-3

I think that first nap could be a catch up maybe but if that shorter A is giving you a good nap then you may as well stick with it :P
I would try to gently push out both A times, so maybe try an extra 15mins on that first A tomorrow, and for the second A as well.

So if your WU tomorrow is the same your day would be
WU 7.30
A 2hrs15mins
Nap 9.45 (say for 2 hrs to 11.45)
A 2hrs35/40mins or so
Nap 2.20 (say for 1.5hrs)
A 3 hrs
BT 7pm

It is the A time between naps that is causing the shorter nap as he isnt tired enough to sleep longer IYKWIM?

Haven't had a chance to login until now. Here is what I have so far for yesterday evening. I'll try your idea of extending A tomorrow.

S- 4:30-6pm! he switched his long afternoon nap for the evening catnap! Arrrggg

E- 5 oz at 6pm

A-6-8:15pm

S-8:15pm nighttime bath, bottle, rock

Cried at 11pm, put his paci back in. Woke up at 1am I gave him 5 oz in his bed.

2:25am- woke up and husband put paci back in, back to sleep until 4:10-4:20am husband soothed him in his crib.

Slept from 4:20-4:40. Woke up screaming, husband soothed him in crib until 5am.

5am- drank 5oz from bottle slept from 5-6:15am up for the day!

He usually sleeps until 7:30, so I don't know why he woke up so early!

Down for first nap of the day at 8:20am... Hoping it's a long one.
