What's going on here?!?!?
« on: January 20, 2012, 20:41:27 pm »
I'm not sure if we're at the point of regression or if we're doing something wrong but nighttime is not going well here.  I had another post on the prop board but I don't think this should go there.  Some background started PD (no PU) with 9 month old ds2 Sunday night.  Before that we were cosleeping and rocking to sleep for naps.  Went very well only had to PD once and he woke up 4 times I think and I let him nurse if it had been 4 hours (nursed 2x first few nights).  I've been stretching that time out now and only let him nurse once.  Last night and the night before he was awake I'd say 8 or 9 times (don't know for sure DH is doing overnight  mostly).  He did wake up last night 3x in a 2 hour span before I even went to bed.  Once after 45 min then 15 min later.  He does have a pacifier that he can replug.  I don't think he knows how to find it but I've been putting it near his hand and he puts in his mouth.  He initially goes to sleep pretty easily but just keeps waking up and I don't know if it's the pacifier or what.  How long should it take him to learn how to find the pacifier? How do I help him learn that part? Do you think that's the problem?  Should we get rid of that?!?!  With me when he wakes he goes back to sleep pretty easily.  I give him the pacifier tell him its time to sleep and rub his back until he's asleep.  Maybe I should rub his back longer than I do?  He just had his 9 month check up and was already 20 lbs so I don't think he needs a night feed.  Maybe once I don't nurse at all he won't wake as much?  Do you think it's too soon to stop night feeds?

Hopefully someone has some ideas?!?!

Have you tried putting lots of pacis in the cot after he is asleep so he can easily find one?   If he does need help I would give him his paci.  I would push one near his hand and let him grab it and replug himself so he doesn't think he needs you to get it for him.

We were still doing a NF at 9 months but that was more laziness on my part than anything else and i think alot of babies CAN go all night without a feed but for some one NF is needed still.

ANything else going on?  Teeth?  Is he sleeping ok during the day?

Thanks for the quick reply!  I haven't put a bunch in with him yet; I just got new ones.  Do you think 4 is enough or should I get more?  DH says sometimes he won't pick up the pacifier so he puts it in his mouth then.  Should he just keep pushing it towards his hand instead?  Maybe that's part of the problem...I'm going to do nightwakings tonight to give DH a break so I'll see what happens.  Naps are pretty much the same as they've always been.  Sometimes we get a good 1.20 in then morning then an hour in the afternoon or vice versa.  Sometimes wakes up after 40 min and since ST I have been able to get him back to sleep all but one time I think.  It is easier to get him back to sleep when he wakes up early from naps since starting ST.  Today he woke up early and went back to sleep (I gave pacifier) then woke up 30 minutes later and before I got him up he'd fallen back to sleep and I had to wake him from the nap.  The pacifier was actually underneath him so he fell back to sleep with out it.

I felt sick to my stomach and just yucky the night before last so I thought he probably felt like that too and that's why he woke so much that night.  He acted a little grouchy yesterday (and he was difficult to get down for the afternoon nap I think he didn't  have enough A time though) so I gave him some tylenol before bed last night incase he was teething the night before.  He only has two teeth so far and I thought he was teething a couple weeks ago but nothing has shown up yet.

I just read on another post that ENW can be overtired.  I think I'll get him to bed earlier tonight and see if that helps....

Yes i would make sure he is replugging himself.  It will help change his wee thought process from 'wake up-cry-mummy/daddy give dummy-back to sleep' to 'wake up-find dummy-back to sleep'.  I'd try with 4 and see how he gets on.

I wonder is he a bit OT?  2hour 20 day sleep is low for 9 months.  That could be causing the NWs early on.

I wonder if making he was just feeling a bit unwell? Lets see how tonight goes and see if you need a further plan.  It could have been a bit of regression too.  Stick with what you've been doing (except with the dummy) and it will click.

Vibes for a good night x

So Friday night went really well.  He went down pretty easy at 640 then woke at 330(!!!!) I nursed him and he started to fall back to sleep pretty quickly on the breast so I put him down and shhed he and he went to sleep.  He did wake up at 530 and I was able to get him to go back to sleep easily but he woke up about 20 minutes later and I realized he'd peed out of his diaper and was soaked so we were up for the day.  Last night didn't go as well he did sleep from about 7 to 1230 so at least we didn't have a bunch of ENW.  I think he is certainly teething although I can't find any signs of it in his mouth.  If it's not teeth then he's sick of some sort!  AF has also just reappeared so maybe my milk supply was down a bit those nights he woke so much.  I hate to think he may have been hungy :(  Oddly enough since I bought the new pacifiers (I got the ones appropriate for his age so they may be a *bit* different) he no longer wants it!  I push it near his hand and most of the time he pushes it out of the crib.  I wonder if that could have something to do with teething to?  Maybe his mouth is sore?  Thanks for your help.  Hopefully this round of teething (or whatever it is) will be over soon and we can have some consistent nights!
