nap not long enough
« on: January 27, 2012, 18:01:59 pm »
My son is almost 13 months old. I switched him to one nap at 11 months and since then he rarely sleeps longer than 1.5 hrs.  When i switched my older two children to one nap they would sleep for 3 hrs so i am wondering why he is only sleeping 1.5 hrs and if there is anything i can do to switch it.  It doesn't seem like he is so happy when he wakes up.  I put him down for his nap around 4.5 hrs after he wakes up and then put him down for the night bet 4 and 4.5 hrs after he wakes up from his nap.  So today he woke up at 6:45 am.  I put him to sleep at 11:15 am-he went to sleep very easily.  Now he woke up at 12:45 pm so i will put him to sleep for the night around 5pm.  I would love for him to sleep longer so that he will wake up happy and so i can put him to sleep later for the night.

Since i posted here i have been trying to extend his awake time but it still doesn't seem to be helping.  His naps are literally 1.5 hrs on the dot. i think i could set a timer.  occasionally (like maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks) he does sleep for 3 hrs.  yesterday he woke up at 6:15am so i put him to nap at 11:30am (5 hrs and 15 min awake time) and he slept for 3 hrs.  today i wasn't sure what time he woke up so i put him to sleep at 12:15pm and he woke up at 1:45pm.
what gets me so frustrated is that he doesn't seem to be happy when he wakes up.  he acts as if he is in the middle of his nap.  and the other thing that gets me frustrated is bec he can take a 3 hr nap and bec my other kids did it i feel like he should be doing that consistently.  in general since he was born i rarely have success at getting him back to sleep if he needs more than his paci or another bottle.  so when i try to put him back to sleep, his crying and fighting me gets me even more frustrated.
mostly the fact that his naps are always precisely an hour and half makes me feel like something is going on.

what do you think?

What made you switch to one nap, if you dont mind me asking??  I am dealing with crazy naps with my 13 month old and short nights because of them and I was wondering how you did the transition?  Just cold turkey?  :)

LOL, I hear ya!! My DS is taking his naps just fine, it just makes our days 13-14 hours long and he is getting OT in the process.  :(  THis is such a hard time.  I had a sleep lady warn me about this stage and she said its by far the hardest time.

All kids are different. I have to wake my Z from every nap now he is on one, but getting there was hard, we would have some 45min ones, some 1.5hrs (for us this was OT) and some 3 hr ones.

I think really for most toddlers 13-14 hrs sleep is average, but it is important that they get both a good night and nap/ KWIM? That said some kids just dont nap for long periods ever, but are great night sleepers. Go with what works for you and your LO and if you feel that 1.5hrs is all he needs and he is doing 13hr nights and is well rested that may be his rhythm.
