16 weeks

It's always been "hard" to feed DD but lately I'm so done with it.  When ever it's time to feed her a bottle I dread it.  It's hard work!!!  I feel like most of the milk ends up on the cloth I've placed under her mouth.  MESSY eater is an understatement.  But if it were only this I would be fine.  We are experiencing lots of fussing and on and off the bottle who knows how many times.  She seems so hungry at the beginning but 1 or 2 ounces in and she seems completely uninterested.  I'd leave it at that but then 2 hrs later she's hungry again.  It isn't common for me to just be done after 3 ounces and then feeding happens hopefully every 3 hours if she can make it.  I can get another ounce in easier if I wait 30-45min but that's pretty inconvenient.  She feeds really well at the dream feed and her night feed usually taking 5ounces at both of those feeds.  However, it's a struggle to get even 4ounces in during the day time.  I thought perhaps if I try to stretch out feeds it would make feeding easier and so today I stretched her out 3.5hrs, which involved a lot of distraction, and after 2 ounces she was fussing and wiggling a bunch.  Laying her down flat seems to help us get a little more in but even with this her head is going back and forth and milk is flying in my face, which totally annoys me.  I'm pretty unsure of how to make feedings easier, or if there is any way.  If there is, I am obviously unable to think of it.

Maybe time to move up a nipple size??

Also, at 16 weeks, she could well be ready to move to a 4 hr EASY...

I never thought about nipple size, so I will try it out.  I think she may be ready for a 4hr easy also but her A times are still at 1hr 30 min and it seems with this and the short naps we get from being out and about we are feeding sometimes before 3hrs to try and prevent OT.

That's probably not helping things for you to be honest :-\. If you are feeding her before she is really hungry then it starts a cycle of snacking, she doesn't take a full feed so is hungry before 3 hours etc. You need to start fresh in the morning, get a full feed in her and go from there.

She is also getting to an age where the world is very interesting so feeding in a dark place with no distractions often helps. I would watch feeding flat though as it can lead to ear infections if milk gets into their drainage tubes, I would prop her up a bit on a cushion.

With DD2 we had the same problem. And now with DS it's happening again. 2oz in he's interested in being social and not eating. Sometimes a dark quiet room helps (like when finishing the bottle before BT) but w/ DD1 & DD2 it's not possible to do that during the day. Sometimes I will lay him in the boppy facing away from me (so he is staring at the wall or something) and I will sit behind him holding the bottle and feed him the rest of his bottle that way. Sometimes it works- HTH!

Hi! I have similar issues... I agree that a dark quiet room helps, so does white noise. For a while I've had to do all feeds like that, lately it seems to have gotten slightly better. Changing nipple size might help as well, give it a try!

Good luck!
Elise
