23 month old sick and waking at 45 min mark for naps
« on: February 14, 2012, 19:02:09 pm »
Just wanted to know if any had their LO wake after 45 min into their nap when sick.  My DS has a fever which we are controlling with Motrin but for the last 3 days he wakes and cries.  The first day (we didn't realize he was sick) he cried for about 15 min and then went back to sleep for 10 min.  Yesterday he woke, cried for 4 min, then went back to sleep for 45 min, cried out again and then slept for another 45 min.  Today he woke up right at that 45 min mark and is crying.

What did you do if this happened to you?  DId your LO get back on track after being sick?  Why do you think this is going on?  Any thoughts/advice?  He doesn't want to be rocked when he wakes, held or anything....he just seems mad that he's not sleeping.  Not sure what to do for him.

Hi there.
Sorry to hear your LO is unwell.

I'm going to move you over to the toddler sleep board so you can get advise from the mummies over there OK?

(HUGS) Hun, sometimes my Lo will stir or cry between 45mins and 1hr10 when sick which is usually light sleep for him. TBH I am a bit of a soft touch and I just usually go in and give him a cuddle, BF or help him back to sleep if I need to. That said when my LO wakes mid nap he gets really upset and he only does so when ill so we tend not to end up with prop issues unless he is poorly for quite some time.

If you think he can/will resettle on his own I would leave him to try to do so, esp if you know interfering could make it worse. You could try sneaking in at 40mins os so and being there when he stirs to help him through the transition, but again this could make things worse. Its tough when they are ill, I tend to just do 'whatever works' and if you end up with a shor tnap just offer another one late PM or EBT maybe to prevent OT.

Thanks ZacsMumme!  I ended up shh/patting him back to sleep which took about 5 min and then he slept for another 2.75 hours at which point I woke him.  It was already 4:30pm and I wanted him to get to bed at a reasonable time which ended up not being an issue at all.  He was asleep by 7:15pm, clearly this bug is wiping him out.  I just struggle with not wanting to create a prop but at the same time I don't want him to be left crying.  Poor little guy, I think we'll be back at the doctors tomorrow if he still has a fever.

I know its hard, but just think how rotten you feel when sick, you need extra comforts...as do they and you are their #1 comfort.
Hugs for you and your little man, hope he comes right soon - I think another Dr visit is a good idea.

Went back to the doctor and he still has a temp and now white blotches on his throat as well as swollen tonsils.  They ruled out strep and are thinking mono although it could be something else viral.  No meds...kind of wish we had a specific diagnosis and they want to talk again on friday of he still has a temp.  He slept 7:15-6:15am with no waking for meds so that was good.  PD for nap at noon b/c of dr. appt and he cried again around the 40 min mark, went up and patted him back to sleep.  We'll see.

Hugs, poor baby. At least you know he is def poorly, he has reason to be waking. Are you giving pain meds before naps?
