3 month old waking every two hours
« on: February 15, 2012, 16:22:10 pm »
Hello,
I have a three month old bf baby boy, who has been waking at night every two hours for the last two weeks. We have been on an 3 hour easy schedule for the last month. He never took to the schedule as quick as my daughter, only going max 5 hours at night. Then every thing went wrong when I started a dream feed at 10p instead of one between 11-12p in an attempt to get him to sleep longer in the middle of the night. It came back to haunt me! He started waking every 2 hours after that! He takes 4 naps during the day, but usually wakes after 45 minutes, I then try to give him a pacifier to get him to sleep a little longer, sometimes he does sometimes he doesn't. His awake time is no longer than an hour and a half between naps. When he wakes at night, i usually try to the shoosh/pat, some times it works, but most the times I give him a pacifier and he goes back to sleep. I don't feed him when he wakes up, only if its been more than 4 hours, then I nurse him and he always takes both sides, but then he's not that hungry in the morning. He is never that fussy at night except at the 4am waking, he acts like hes in pain then, and usually has a lot of gas. During the day he's been feeding every 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and that's usually because his naps are so short. The routine before every nap and bed time is I swaddle him, give his pacifier, turn on the sound machine (I have a noisy toddler in the house) and lay him down in a positioner in his crib. He is awake when I lay him down, and he usually falls asleep on his own every time. My questions to you are...

Could the pacifier be the problem?  He usually spits it out and doesnt wake when that happens.

Should I let him cry it out at night?

Should I stretch his feedings during the day?

Any other suggestions?

Have any of you experienced any of this?

Thanks for your help!

Hi there and welcome to BW. :)

First of all please do not let your LO CIO, it is definitely not the BW way and it does nothing but leave your DS giving up crying because he has lost all hope that Mummy will ever come to help him. :'(

For us to get to the bottom of this can you post your EASY in EAS format, including DF, NF and NW, for us to take a look at? It is also very common for a BF baby to still need a DF and a NF at 3 mo, so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

It could be that the paci has become a prop, but does he need it to fall asleep or not?

Thank you for your reply, my easy today from 10pm last night til 10pm tonight goes as follows...

DF - 10-11pm awake off and on
NW - 1 am fed him both sides
NW - 3am
NW - 4-5am awake off and on
E - 6am both sides
A - 6:45-8:30
S - 8:45-9:45 woke up put pasi in fell asleep for anothern15 minutes
E - 10 am both sides
A - 10-11
S - 11-12
E - 1:30 didn't seem hungry when he woke so I waited
A - 12-2
S - 2:15-4 woke once, put pasi in, he spit it out and fell back asleep
E - 4:15
A - 4:30-6
S - 6-6:45
E - 7
A - 7-7:45
S - 8 asleep for 20 minutes, woke, did shoosh/pat went back to sleep with pasi in

We'll see how the rest of the night goes. I spaced out his feedings a little today, which he didnt seem to mind, and we did minimal activity today, like every day for the past week. For activity he usually sits in his bumpo or plays on his floor mat. He does need the pasi to fall asleep.

Hi, from looking at your routine I would say that it would help things if you got your A times a little more balanced. At 3 mo most LOs would be doing around 1 hr 20 mins to 1.5 hr A time. So your first A time is quite long which could well be causing your DS to be OT, this can then cause NW and EW too.

So I would try to reduce that first A time down a little and see if that gets you a better first nap. Have a look at these sample routines to see if that helps any... http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=164027.0

Thanks for the advice! Also he is nearing four months, should I be getting him on a 4 hour outline right at 4 months? How long does it take? I've been trying to push back his feedings but with out much success

Usually the move to a 4 hr EASY happens around the time of the 4 mo growth spurt, it is a fairly major one. You will also often get 45 min naps and erratic NW for no real reason, this is a good indicator to start the transition. BF babies may make the change slightly later than FF babies though also. This link shows how you can very slowly push A times and also time between feeds in just 5 minute increments... http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=120362.0
