6 month growth spurt? How do you know and what do you do?
« on: March 01, 2012, 18:15:56 pm »
I think my baby may have started 6 month growth spurt. How do I know for sure? How do I adjust his feedings? He is BF and eats solids as well.

We have been reducing his intake at night feedings but last night he could not get settled the way he does in last week. Also, in the morning he ate at 7 and then was hungry and ate again at 8:30.

Thank you for advice in advance!

You'll probably find that he's wanting to feed more frequently for a few days if it's a GS and may start waking more in the night.

All you can do is breastfeed when he's hungry and things should settle down in a few days.

tracy has some good ideas to increase milk during the day for growth spurts.  one is to feed both sides and then back to the first side for feeds for a day to signal an increase in milk production and the other thought is to add an extra feed or two in for a day.

As for "how do I know for sure?" I found I only really knew after it was over.  Not helpful, I know, but the wanting to nurse more often and the fussiness can be so many things!  Usually I'd go with the more frequent feeds for a few days and if it didn't resolve, look for other causes (teething, illness, etc).

This. It's so tough to tell! Don't worry too much about it. If he wants to nurse, let him. You can always stretch the time between feeds later when you feel like he doesn't need to be eating so frequently. And you'll know when that is.

Ugh! The 6 month GS was huge for us!! AND we were on a holiday!! Good luck!! Often they can sleep more after a growth spurt- all that growing makes you tired i guess!!

So my baby woke up yesterday night at 10:20 (4.5oz), 1:50-I BF and then again at 4am, my husband tried to give bottle, he refused it, could not settle down. I BF-one side, then he went down. Not very hungry this am...Normally he wakes twice. Im confused by the last NW, did not seem that hungry...
