My Son has suddenly gone off his milk..is this common?
« on: March 03, 2012, 09:15:36 am »
Hi Everyone,

DS Sam was 2 in January and I had tried to take away his bottle 3 times before but 3 weeks ago I switched him to sippy cup and he never batted an eyelid  :) Previously he had started to leave milk in his bottles. He was on 3 bottles a day of 6 oz morning and night and I had recently cut the 4 oz pre nap bottle and replaced it with water. So, since he has gone to sippy cup he has gradually stopped drinking his milk...I have managed to get him to drink some by talking about how his piers ie: 'best friends' drink all of there milk to make them strong, he takes everything on board which is lucky, but he still isn't drinking more than approx. 5 oz a day. He has porridge or cereal for his breakfast with milk and sometimes has a yoghurt/fromage frais but he has also recently gone off those a little bit...that dairy is extra. He occasionally eats cheese. He is a very healthy weight but I'm slightly concerned he may not be getting enough dairy onboard. What is the recommended amount for his age please  ???

I guess he was drinking the milk from his bottle as he still enjoyed the suckling  ??? He sure loves his dummy  ::).

Thanks for reading everyone  :) Hope you can help.x.

Toddlers aged 1-3 need about 500mg of calcium per day.  If he is not drinking milk and eating other dairy there are lots of other ways to get calcium. Milk and dairy products are just the easiest!  Sorry the chart is a bit wonky and hard to read, but the first number is the serving size (1 cup =250ml which is about 8oz) and the second number is the amount of calcium --

Milk, whole or low-fat   1 cup 300 mg calcium
Soy or Rice Milk   1 cup      300 mg
White beans   1/2 cup   113 mg
Instant Oatmeal   1 cup     100 mg
Broccoli, cooked   1/2 cup   35 mg
Broccoli, raw   1 cup     35 mg
Cheddar cheese   1.5 oz   300 mg
Yogurt, low-fat   8 oz    300 mg
Orange juice, calcium fortified   1 cup     350 mg
Orange, medium   1   40-50 mg
Sweet potatoes, mashed   1/2 cup   44 mg
