2.5 year old EW
« on: March 08, 2012, 03:19:17 am »
Hi
my 2.5 amazing LO has found a new hobby - standing at the side of my bed and poking me at 5:30 which is not easy given that I am up to feed a 4 months old a couple of hours prior to that. It started when his grandparents were visining from oversees. initially he woke several times a night and i put it down to the big changes he went through - including then new born, oversees visitors, and changing rooms in child care. following advice here, I made sure I had plenty of one on one time with him during the day and tried my best not to give him any positive reinforcement for these wakings. that seemed to help with the night wakings but not with the EW. its like it has become a habit - doesn't matter that i once was a great sleeper now when I wake i need mum to acknowledge this before I go back to bed and wait for the sun in the groclock. I have limited his nap time in child care to one hour and he fights his nap over the weekends, sometimes taking it sometimes not. I also pushed his bedtime from 19:30 to 20:00 which seemed to help a bit (used to wake at 5:00) at the moment when he wakes me in the morning, he'll see that i'm up then turn and walk straight to his room into bed and wait for me to come and cover him. then he'll either fall back asleep or just wait until 6:10 when the sun comes up in the clock. over the past few days, befor i leave the room he has asked for a kiss which i know might be a positive reinforcement but i don't have the heart to say no to. we started toilet trainig last week so I am trying to make sure he doesn't get too upset and make the toilet thing a control issue. he is doing reasonably well for the first week.
any ideas how I can work on this with a subtle approach? any twigging to his nap or bed time? or is he just going to do this for a while until it sorts itself out?

thanks.

I think he's OT, an earlier BT may be the answer - particularly on no nap days. Does he have an 8pm BT even on days that he doesn't nap? If so that's a very long day - 5.30am to 8pm. EW's for us always meant OT.

Do you notice any differnce on the days he naps to the days he doesn't?

hi
i've tried for the past few weeks moving back BT to his previous time 7:30 and what is happening now is that he wakes up once during the night - it can be any time either NW (last night was at 1:00 am) or EW and do the same thing - wait to see that i am up and he goes back to bed to sleep without a fuss. it happens once a night and then he sleeps through. it does seem like just a bad habit he developed... it seems he doesn't even "try" to go into the next cycle.... the second he comes out of the cycle and realises that he is up, he jumps out of bed. funny thing is that the only two nights over the past 3 weeks that he did sleep through was when we went to thailand to meet family... not happy about these trips but at the moment they are inevidable...) and he had no nap days.
I am a bit confused about the whole situation and unfortunately I think I am slowley just getting used to it and waiting for him to just grow out of it.... at 2.5, is their sleep adult like already?

It possibly needs to be earlier - can you get him into bed for 7pm for a few nights and see if that helps at all?
