Short naps resettling question!
« on: March 14, 2012, 12:19:32 pm »
Hi! DS has been having short naps for a few weeks now, he used to be a good napper.

I try to not go in too early to resettle him in case he does it himself (he used to when he was smaller but not lately), but since he never does, by the time I go in he's really fully awake.  Should I go in as soon as he wakes?

Also, any of you ladies that resettle successfully, can you share what you do? I am having trouble resettling DS, nothing seems to work!

We removed the pacifier this week-end since I think this was causing issues (15-20 min naps, now 45-50 since I cut it), and he's swaddled.  He's starting to find his thumb so I left one arm out this morning for the first time.

TIA! :)

When Z short naps now that I know he usually doesn't I usually know why ie pain and If i know he needs me I go in and now he is older a quick cuddle, aim meds or teething jel and twinkle twinkle will make him settle enough to go back in his cot to sleep. But prior to this (ie 14 mths and younger) I totally APOPed him back to sleep ;)

I did also do W2S and HTTJ but this was when he was developmentally short napping all the time ::)

Do you think maybe you red an A increase or he is in a developmental leap?

I've found that the way I resettle my DS has changed over time with his age/development (and what the problem is, ie OT/UT/pain/illness/routine change) so I'd find it difficult to say exactly what would work for another LO but I'd look at what is in the wind down and repeat some aspect of that if possible as these are the cues to sleep.

I think it may be developmental but I'm not sure... it's been 2-3 weeks that he hasn't taken one nice nap in his crib.  I cut the paci because that was part of the problem, but we still have short naps.  I played around with the A time a little bit but couldn't find the right one I guess, or it could be developmental.  How do I know? I guess if none of the A times work and he never takes a longer nap, it is probably developmental?

He naps well in the car seat or the stroller though... so I end up inventing outings in the PM to get him to nap at all because he really needs his naps, and it's a nightmare when he does those short naps.  Even if I get one nice nap out of him in the car seat or the stroller, it's not enough, he would need more like 2-3 good naps to be alright in the evening.

I just cannot seem to resettle him no matter what... used to be able to, 1 month back approx, now I have tried doing exactly what we're doing during wind down but he just gets angry at me.  But if I put him in his car seat and leave he'll fall right back asleep so I know he hasn't had enough sleep!

Some Los are developmentally short nappers. Z was one, I did w2S and HTTJ for 2 months with mixed success but no matter what I did till 6 months he short napped on and off ::) what happens if you leave him when he stirs. Does he cry for you, do you think he would resettle himself if he was given a chance? Are you using white noise?

I am trying to not go in when he wakes, but he ends up crying louder and louder until he's angry so I usually go in then... I am wondering if I should go right away to try to resettle him instead because by the time I get there, he's fully awake.

Yes we are using white noise, although I leave it on low during the week when DD is in daycare (and higher on the week-ends because she makes so much noise!) :)

Hope it gets better before he's 6 months  ::)

Yah I would certainly try to go in quickly and see if it helps too. I know your not meant to but sometimes it's needs must! I also found if I could tell when he was going to stir I could sneak in ready for the waking and then help shh etc back to sleep.
