We've worked on getting our son's A times longer and extending naps.  It has gone well!!  Thanks to all the help on here  :)

I'm wondering if his longer naps are causing EW?  Yesterday he napped 3 hours total in two naps and went to sleep at 6:40pm (4 hours of A time, but he handled it well).  He woke at 5:40am.  Slept 11 hrs uniterrupted.  Some nights he'll go 12 and some nights it's 11.5.  We're at about 2hrs 45 min of A time after wakeup, and after his first nap.  Should he be able to do 3hrs?  He's very tired at 2.45mins.  Would love to get to 7pm bedtime and a bit later wake up if possible.

Hey hun,

11 hrs of night sleep is not an EW ;)  An EW is less than 10 hrs of night sleep.

His total sleep is around 14 hrs - right on track ;)

Do not wake him from naps - he is far too young for that!  Stick with it for now and when your AM nap starts to shorten, push his first A time.  In a month, you will see a bit of a jump in his times so BT will push out a bit.

You could try shifting his entire day - naps and BT to put BT at a later time and then a later wake time as well.  Start by pushing everything out by 5 mins a day...

Ok.  Sounds good.  Trying to figure out what his total sleep number is.  It's between 13.75 and 15 hours.  It varies.  Probably normal.  It's hard to get to any kind of later bedtime right now with such early wakeups, but we are getting used to it.  He's great overall!

We'll keep it like it is for now and then start to push a bit in a month like you suggested.  Yesterday I kept him up for almost 3 hours right before his second nap and he was very cranky and cried a bit during the wind down.  I knew he was overtired.  Sure enough, he woke at 30 mins, but was happy, talked and scooted for 15 mins and went back to sleep  for another hour.  Whew!  Dodged a bullet there.  I think he's ok at 2hrs 45 mins, but no  longer.  Although, the stretch to bedtime has been between 3-4hrs lately.  So far he's handling it.

Thank you!

You are welcome - my DD did 4 hrs to bed at 6 months ;)  But, that was after a full 2 hr nap :)

Hi Kara.  Well I'm not sure what is going on in the last three days.  He has gone from sleeping 11-12 hours at night, to only 10hrs 20 min to 10 hrs 45mins.

His schedule just seems to be all over the place I guess.  Maybe if someone told me that at 6 mos their "schedule" should still be a bit unsettled, then I could relax a bit.

Past three nights are a bit different but have been this, 16th BT 6:45pm WU 5:30am (3hrs 35mins of naps in 2 naps 3hrs 45 min A time before BT) *****17th BT 6:55pm WU 5:20am but fed him at 6am and he slept from 6:30-7:30 (3hr 5 min of naps in 3 naps had a CN, 2hrs 55 min A time before BT)*****18th(last night), BT 7pm WU 5:30am (2hr 30 min of naps in 2 naps and 3hr 20 min of A time before BT)

His A time during the day is right around 2hrs 40mins.  I pushed it the other day to almost three hours and he woke at 30min into his nap, but did put himself back to sleep after 10mins of shuffling.

When he wakes in the am he never fusses or cries.  He is pretty quiet, just rolling a bit, playing with his feet, and a talk here and there.  I really don't think he's hungry because of the zero fuss.  Also, he eats plenty all day.  Solids three times a day, and 30oz of formula.  He just had a checkup and he's doing great with height and weight.  He's been STTN for about 3mos now for around 11-12 hours.

His naps have gotten much better in the last 2-3 weeks due to increasing A times.  Could he just not be tired enough to make it past that 5ish am light waking?  He has always made some "noise" around the 5am mark, but usually will go back to sleep.

His appetite has greatly increased over the last week, he's on the verge of crawling and sitting up, and he is going to get a tooth here anyday, I can finally see one or two almost popping out on the bottom middle.  He doesn't seem bothered by the teeth at all, just drooling and chewing on everything.

Any insights would be helpful.  Also, I have sent you a private message with a quick question, unrelated to sleep.

Thank you so much,
jennfl

Every one of these things will mess with sleep terribly!  Milestones that are physical in nature (sitting/rolling) tend to cause poor night sleep as LO practices during the night instead of sleeping.  Loads of daytime practice during A time will get you through it quicker!  but, know that it is normal to have a week or two of tough sleep.  Same with teething - I feel your pain with that one - molars here though!

PM'd you back :)

The crazy thing is, he doesn't really try to practice the sitting up or the crawling that much at all during the night.  We have a video monitor.  Even in the early am when he's awake, he's just quiet and laying there, but awake.  Nothing like when he started rolling.  He practiced that all the time during the night and it was bad.

Just wondering if there's anything I may be doing wrong or if I should just ride it out?  Anything seem out of whack with his day?

Got your message.  Thankyou!

He could be increasing his A times again with the good naps :)  Maybe push to more like 2 hrs 50 mins?
