Pumping extra milk
« on: March 29, 2012, 16:57:15 pm »
Hi ladies - I know that I want to pump extra milk for my baby for when I go back to work.  He's a week old and breast feeding well right now.  When do people think it would make sense to start pumping after his feeds?

Thanks for your thoughts!

You can try pumping about 1h after he eats and start storing up that way.  For me, I started saving up when Dh would give DD a bottle with formula (for whatever reason or another, it happened from time to time before I went back to work), and I would pump and freeze it.  Then, I took out the milk a couple days before I went back to work so it could thaw in the fridge, and now I pump every day for her next day's meals.

Another thing you could do--and this is for later on once he's not a teeny newborn and eating 24/7--you can pump during a feed that he no longer takes.  For example, if you don't do a DF, go ahead and pump at that time and store it away.

HTH a bit...perhaps others will share some insight, too.

When are you headed back to work?  If you can, I'd wait a few weeks until your supply regulates a touch or you'll probably have oversupply issues.  Your milk supply will really be regulating the next few weeks so adding some pumping will tell it to make a lot more!

I am going back to work on the next 23rd. I've been pumping to build up a stash since DD2 was 2.5 months old. So she'll be 6.5 mo by then.
She'll be taking 2 feeds of pumped milk/day.
I pump around 1 hour after her first feed and after her second feed. I don't get too much from the second pumping session.
I am planning to start pumping (dream pump - at DF time, around 10 pm) as soon as she STTN. I did this for DD1 and it worked fine.
I used to send what I had expressed the day before (at lunch time and at night) and the caregivers would mix it with frozen milk.
But I agree with pp, wait a few weeks until your supply regulates and then pump!  ;)

Also bear in mind that the way your milk is constituted alters based on the age of your baby (no idea how your body knows, but it does!) so any stockpiled milk from 4 months previous won't be identical to that which LO would be getting at the present.

Not to say it's no good, but worth considering. :)

Good point!  I'd try to rotate the freezer stash, too, using it within a month or two.

Thanks Amanda!  ;)  I know that the composition is different, but I thought it would be better to give her my milk instead of formula. Nothing against formula, it's just a personal wish to keep her on my milk as much as I can.  :P

I have a couple of months so I can wait a few weeks.  So if the baby eats say at 10 AM I would pump at 11 AM.

No, no, totally agree.  Any milk of from you will be great, just one to bear in mind as she may need more/less of different milk :)
