Extended feeding and additional nutrition needs?
« on: March 30, 2012, 20:10:18 pm »
I'm hoping someone might be able to offer some advice when it comes to extended breastfeeding and daily requirements...here is my situation: I  continue to breastfeed my 13 month old as his main source of food as he has a very sensitive reflux and is only now starting to eat chunkier foods. I try to incorporate breakfast/lunch/dinner in solid form but he isn't too interested. He has started refusing to eat iron fortified cereal which he quite happily ate 2x a day until 1 week ago. He also refuses fruit purees which he used to love. The only thing I can seem to get him to eat is anything that has cheese on it. My concern is that he is no longer getting what he requires nutritionally from my milk alone...what is the daily nutritional requirement for a primarily breastfed 13 month old? Should I be worried that he isn't eager to eat a lot of solids? What should I do to ensure his iron level won't drop since he is refusing to eat cereal? HELP!!!

DS is a little younger than your young man and still having four BF's a day... Kellymom has some good info - http://kellymom.com/ages/older-infant/ebf-benefits/. This one comes to mind, there's other info on the site if you go looking :)

The iron in your milk is also more easily absorbed by his body than that from the fortified cereal.  I'm not totally sure on the levels, but I remember being told that. :)

In regards to the iron, can you get him to eat meat (pureed is fine) - much better source of iron anyway.
