10 1/2 month old random NW & having a play in his cot
« on: April 04, 2012, 06:37:45 am »
Hi there,
Just when I thought we had cracked it and LO had a perfect routine he's gone and changed it again  :) LO currently has 3 3/4 hours wake time so two sleeps a day but over the last three nights has started to wake randoonly in the night, not upset but playing and pulling on his crib bars. He will not settle for a least an hour.

Current routine is as follows:

6.45 - Wake and milk
8.30 - breakfast
10.30 - sleep -1.5 - 2 hours typically
12.00 - lunch
3.30 - sleep - 1 hour (I usually wake him at one hour as this seems to work better for his night time)
4.30 - milk
5.45 - tea
7 - bathtime and milk
7.30 - bed (sleeps straight through)

Can anybody help please? Is LO ready for the 2-1 naps as he seems young at 10 months and I am finding he needs that afternoon nap especially if he wakes a little earlier in the morning. Is it because he is exploring/ crawling/ trying to walk? Any ideas would be really grateful  :D ;D

Thanks,
V x

you could well be in the throws of the 2-1. Dont worry it can take months to get to 1 nap ;)

Have a look at these links and let me know what you think? - We can then go from there :)

Also, when you say he is waking and playing - This is often an UT sign, what times are the NW usually?

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply with this.

Okay so things seem to have gone a little better this last week and if anything LO is sleeping in til gone 7am straight through from 7.30pm. However......LO will now sleep for 2 hours in the morning at say 11am but then is refusing afternoon nap - so i assume this is the 2-1 transition that you mention?

Do you suggest putting LO down after 3.45 as per usual but waking after 1 hour and then letting him have an afternoon nap for one hour?

What's the average wake time for a 12 month old?

The night wakings were 4am, 5am and got later until he got back into his normal routine?

Thanks again, Vicky xx

This is great, and if your LO can cope with it over a period of time - and not get too OT from the long A times then you may find he is ready for 1 nap. You will likely find that he cant quite last the arvo so I would maybe see if something like this would work (With your usual WU time)
WU 6.30
Nap 11-1
CN 5-5.30
BT 7.30

If you want to try for 1 nap days then your day may look more like this on those days
WU 6.30
Nap 11-1 or later (preferably 1.30)
BT 6pm so early BT with the hope your LO will tack onto his nights. Some do, some dont :-\

What's the average wake time for a 12 month old?
It varies so much but we are on 1 nap at 12 months with an A time of 4.5hrs and 3hr long nap. Some LOs can only cope with 4hrs, others are up to 5.

You can do the 2 nap thing with 2 shorter naps. However you may find it gets tough as he gets closer to 1 nap as you want to move towards one long nap over lunch. Capping both naps makes it hard to do the move to 1 nap IYKWIM?

There is a support thread for the 2-1 transition too. I found this thread really helpful and I could chat with others going through it. YOu just join on in :)

Morning,

Thanks for response.

I am a little confused with what to do this morning? ??? ::) LO woke at 5.10am this morning wide awake, had his milk and finally went back to sleep with us in our bed until 6.45am?! Thought he may have slept in after not having an afternoon nap but it obviously doesn't work like that!

I did read on the 2-1 thread that you should give LO a nap in the morning but cap it at one hour and then give them another nap in the afternoon, by this time they'll be tired and need it. What do you suggest? The two hour naps or his usual one big one? Do you think maybe I should push him out to 4 - 4.5 wake time? I did try the CN in the afternoon on Sat and once last week but he just won't take it?

I would definaytely prefer to move towards oone nap so maybe I should push his wake time put in 15 min incriments?

Thanks so much for your help :D ;D

V xx

There are two options. Often the prered is today the AM nap so LO takes a long PM nap, then once you reduce/cut the AM nap the PM is brought forward. However, some LOs -like mine just did two short naps when I tried this as her preferred a long morning nap, so I had Togo the other way, push out the AM nap,let him sleep over lunch and if it was short offer a Cn. We only go the Cn in the car ::)

I think it's worth trying capping the AM nap, but I would ap it at 5 mins to ensure you get the PM nap. Maybe try to PD for the PM one after 2-2.5 hrs.

I know it's hard, once you get something that works for now I promise the rest is easier ;) x

Hey,

Sorry for the tardiness in response. Thanks for the advice. My LO is exactly the same, I have tried to play around with his routine gently but he loves his morning nap and can take up to 2.5 hours at 10/ 11ish over lunch - I just suppose it'll take time for him to be able to manage up until lunchtime.

I am at 4 hours A time at the moment:

WU 6.30
S - 10.30 - 12.30/ 1pm
CN - 5 (If I am lucky but he does seem to have had this the last couple of days).

I think I'll do the same, offer a CN if he goes down earlier/ hasn't had enough sleep and hopefully over these next few weeks push out the morning nap in 5 min incriments? Then hopefully we'll get to lunchtime at some point soon.

Thanks so much for youe help

V xx :) ;)

Sounds great Hun,
If yuan get that nap to 11-1 (or later) you will hopefully find OU an PDat 6pm for then night and get a long night ;)

The CN at this point for us was only ever accepted in the car. I would go for a drive and give Z his lovey and paci and he would drift off. Eventually it was needed less and also refused more so we canned it.
