Wow thanks for all the replies :)

Ali, hugs, I hope things come right quick for you! I am sure we will have fun when the time comes...Z isn't good with change ;)

So I guess from what I am reading thre is no ideal age as such, it's just when it is best for your LO and/or the families needs.

I would like to keep Z in his cot as longas poss. One reason is his room is atthe other end of the house, no stairs though thank goodness!

However, here is my dilemma...#2 is due on his 2nd bday ::) so either have him est in a BBB by then, or we wait till we are past the NB stage and things are settled which means another 6 mths or so...then wewill need the cot for #2. Hopefully this one isn't as massive as Z and can stay in the bassinet a lot longer!

What would you do, hold out, or get him into a BBb first :-\. His language isn't great and he is spirited but touchy and sensitive with sleep...another factor to consider

I'd still wait.  As you say, he isn't good with change. There are bound to be regressions when #2 arrives anyway, don't want to add to his transition issues.  But that's just me, and if I didn't need the cot I'd probably just wait.
The tweaking never stops!

We are essentially in the same boat and I think waiting is best too.  If you can buy some extra time with a bassinette then that's a good idea.  That is what we are planning on doing.  Hugs though, I think about this ALL the time.  :P

I'd wait too.  We actually bought a second crib when dd2 was born as dd1 was just 19 months at the time and SO not ready for the transition.  You might ask around, someone might have one they could lend you until Z is ready to move to the BBB.  FWIW, dd1 stayed in the crib until past 3, dd2 was out before she was 2.

Sara could you buy a cotbed for Z so he can stay in a cot as long as possible and then you can change it to a toddler bed when he's ready? And then you can use the cot he is currently in for the new baby when s/he arrives. I assume you will have to shell out on a new bed anyway.

That's exactly what we did and it worked well :)

Well I think he has a cot bed :-\ It is a touchwood cot and converts to a bed/couch etc ... here it is - is this what you mean Ali?
http://www.touchwoodcots.co.nz/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=4&PHPSESSID=qtehj4suj7lnmhheppcb648jq6 (although we have slats right round, no panels)

We don't need to fork out for a bed ;) Im lucky my folks are hoarders and kept my brothers old rimu slat bed that was in our batch so I was thinking of putting Z in that. It is in almost new condition and stored in our garage...we would need a new mattress though.

DH had a good point last night though. No reason #2 cant go in a port-a-cot for a few months if need be right?

How funny Sara, that is exactly the cotbed we have that I had in mind. The brand is called Boori here though but identical. :) http://www.boori.co.uk/index.asp?cat=16&scat=28&p=66&t=Sleigh%203%20in%201
We have had Colby in a Moses basket for the first 8 months of his life (he is in a woombie and doesn't roll or sit up in it as shocking as that sounds) and we have just moved him into a travel cot/pack n play (that is what a portacot is right?) yesterday. We actually bought an identical cotbed to the one you linked that Cadan is currently in for Colby when he moves into Cadan's room but it is too big to fit in our room without moving some of our furniture out and they are so not ready to share yet. We wanted them the same and it says it lasts up to about 4yo I think. We have borrowed the travel cot and my sister needs it back in 6 weeks so we will have to reevaluate then.

I think a pack n play type of bed would work just fine.  Actually after DS2 was born we moved and had to stay at my dad's temporarily, and DS1 slept in the pack n play for about 2mos without any problems.

We do have a proper mattress in ours BTW. I think that is important if you are planning to use it more than occasionally.
Just beware shh/pat is virtually impossible in that type of cot!

What good taste you have Ali ;) I love Z's cot :P

OMG tell me about it!!!! For the odd night we used it with Z it killed my back and if I had to APOP Z to sleep then get him into it...fun times as I am so short he almost dropped into it ::) Yes port-a-cots are like pack-n-plays I think.

Good point with the mattress, the ones that come with it are crapo!

Our bassinet is quite large. I think over in the UK you call it something else. http://www.cariboonz.co.nz/cms/index.php?page=folding-bassinet That said Z was out of it at 10 weeks because he wasnt swaddled and whipped the sides of the bassinet with his arms ::) Hoping with this size bassinet and swaddle #2 should fit fine till the recommended age for out - ie 5 months.
(If I get another refluxer though I am tempted to fork out on a hammock....so expensive though!)

Do you have any re-sale type sites you could look for this stuff?  I got a beautiful second hand cradle in perfect condition for only $50.  It's larger than a bassinette so I expect to use it longer, and also it sways back and forth (but can be locked into place).  I was so happy to find it for such a great deal!  With the bassinette they were too big for it by 3mos max (and that was stretching it), but I expect to hopefully get 6 mos out of the cradle (that is what the seller told me she used it up until).

James spent the first 8 weeks or so in a pack and play as we were moving.  I pulled it right next to our bed and would lay in bed and lean over the side and pat/shhh.

Yes we have trade me. They don't have many hammocks etc though and good quality seems to sell quite pricey. Also because i don't live in Auckland (Where a lot of people live) there are less options. Wellington is a big city for NZ but we have a lot less on Trade me and posting big items is costly. That said I got the bargain of the century with Z's cot. It was brand new and a couple brought it but got the wrong one (they wanted solid panel ends not bars) so they sold it on trade me and I paid about 65% of the new retail price.

It's funny, I just checked in on one of my FB buy/sell pages and someone was selling a hammock.  Go figure!
