breastfeeding, reflux and EASY
« on: May 02, 2012, 18:17:52 pm »
hi,
i have an almost 3mos old except he was born 3 weeks early. i've started to put him on the EASY routine and have run into some snags...
about the eating, he is EBF but he's got a mild case of reflux. some times he'll spit up a bit, sometimes a lot. i've eliminated dairy and caffeine except for a milk tea in the morning. also, if i prop him up after BF, he spits up, if i recline him too long he spits up...he pretty much spits up when he does and there really is no rhyme or reason (or at least none i can find).
anyway, websites say for reflux babies to give them small frequent feeds. how does this fit into an EASY routine? i've tried to modify it so that i give him one breast (feed 10-15 min), then wait 10-15 min and feed him the second breast (feed 10-15min). with an option of taking a third breast depending on how many letdowns i get. this of course eats into his activity time....and he doesn't take the second breast right away either...if he does take a third, he gets it right before nap but i try not to associate it with sleep by feeding him downstairs and doing a diaper change however, he is sleepy by then and sometimes its hard to keep him up during that feed.
how can i assure myself that he is full and can last the 3 hrs AND won't spit up? please HELP!

Hi and welcome!

Does he seem satisfied after just one breast or is he asking for more?
If he does have reflux, I'm not sure there's any way that you can be sure that he won't be sick.  Have you checked out http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0 ?

hi fiver,
thx for the welcome :)
he's satisfied (at that particular moment) with the one breast but gets hungry later...it's like he's on this 45 min clock or something...always wants to feed...which probably interrupts his naps as well now that i think of it...
in terms of spacing out his feeds, i was just trying to minimize his spit up, but you might be right, it might not do anything anyway...
i'll check the reflux 101. thx!

Hi Itram! It's really difficult to follow EASY for a baby with reflux.  What I did for my DS was to allow him to split his feed in two just like you're doing. That helped with the reflux, but it did create a bit of a snacking habit  ::)

However, depending on how uncomfortable he is with his reflux, I think you might need to just do what you need so that he's comfortable, and then work on putting him back on EASY once he's better.  Is his reflux medicated? Is he uncomfortable when he spits up?

When his reflux got controlled, it took about a week of conscious efforts on my part to break his snacking habit and then he was ok.

HTH
