Hello - has anyone had the Mirena placed and noticed a decrease in BM supply?

That's a hormonal IUD right? I went to the doctor who recommended me a copper IUD without hormones which works almost just as well. He didn't recommend the hormonal IUD because it is known to reduce milk supply. I have no problems with the copper IUD and I think you should go for a non-hormonal IUD as well!

I used it and had no problems - I actually had oversupply right to the last days of feeding.

The dose is very, very low - I found it much better than the mini pill which I tried while bf DS.

This article is great http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/birthcontrol/#mini

It notes that progesterone only contraceptives usually cause few problems with supply if started after 6-8w post-delivery, but that they can cause problems for some (I think the mini pill did for me).  Also bears noting the specific information there about the mirena - it delivers progesterone directly to the lining of the uterus, so there is less in the bloodstream to cause problems with BF.

I guess with the mirena, if you did feel that supply was suffering, you could always ask for it to be removed?

However, after consideration, it is entirely up to you to decide what to do.  No one can tell you what form of contraception you can use.

I tried the mini-pill last time and felt like it decreased my supply and am looking for something more long term.  It is appealing that if I get it now there is a good chance of never having a period.  I suppose if it affects my supply I'll get it removed.  I have been pumping after the 7, 10, 1 feeds to save up for when I go back to work so I should have enough even if it does drop a little.
