No, I'm too worried about someone creeping in and stealing them in the middle of the night  ::)  I do leave it open until I go to bed if it's a hot day and then might put it on the latch but like a pp said the birds are sooo loud in the morning that I'm worried they'd wake them up!

OK- so the answer is SOOOO much no to this question that when i read the topic it REMINDED me i'd left Hamish's window wide open!! SO i crept in- risking waking him up at 11.30pm to close it!!

We never had ours wide open as children as mum was freaked out we'd get stolen- and a little girl had been taken from her house and left in the park across the road from our house.. (not sure if she was dead or not :( ) So we always had a window with a screw in it so that it could only open to the screw.

When i was in my late teens and still at home i complained about how hot it was... mum suggested i open the window right up- i said 'no way!! Someone might take me!!'.. Mum suggested that if someone had the commitment to climb over my very messy desk and carry me out over the top of it- then they were probably welcome to me!!

Our balcony doors are open 24/7 (we're on the fourth floor and DD shares our room, so not really worried about baby snatching ;)) - it's far too hot to close them. DD is definitely more used to the sounds outside than me as she's never known anything different.

But even at home I always want a window open at night - and my DH always wants it closed too!

Shows up my laissez-faire attitude to safety - I always thought the concern was children falling OUT not 'people' creeping IN! Wouldn't occur to me to think that!

Anna I also would never have thought of someone crawling in through a window to kidnap a child.  Can you not just put screens over your window? ???

Unfortunately, we've had a few reported incidents here of people kidnapping kids by sneaking in through their windows so I definitely wouldn't be able to sleep knowing their windows are open.  I wish I could leave them DDs open in the summer but she's also super sensitive to noise, so maybe not until she's older.

My mum and dad ALWAYS sleep with their window "ajar" as mammy calls it. So even here, when they visit in winter and its as cold as -25 nighttime, they want their window open!!! That's madness....

I usually open all day (or if we're around, all day) in summer and definately leave their windows open till I go to sleep so 7-11pm every evening in all seasons except lower than +5 lets say, if they're well-covered....and in winter, I also open just for a while. I try to keep the heating to the lowest all year round and our flat is very well insulated so our heating costs less than it would in ireland for sure....

In summer, I usually open the terrace on the roof all night and leave all our room doors open - stays darker and quieter that way (we live on a main junction with trams from 4.30am) and with a very chronic EWer, you can't help to think that perhaps, just perhaps, the closed window will give you a few more minutes shut-eye. (Ozzie's a 6am waker and previous 4.30am waker at his worst).

No-one would manage to get our kids - roof is our access only....and we're 4/5 flights up - 5th floor where we sleep is just ours...
