Blood when using Breast pump
« on: May 21, 2012, 19:42:52 pm »
For the first time ever today there were drops of blood after I used the breast pump.  I use Medela; for about 5-10 min after a feed right now to get extra to store for upcoming date night & to add to 6 mo cereal during day.

Has this happened to anyone else?  Should I be concerned?  What should I change to keep this from happening again?

Thanks!

Are there any cuts on your nipples? That is the most likely cause of blood in the milk - I haven't had it when pumping, but I did when I was feeding ds and he threw up a bit of milk with blood in.

Here's some more info: http://www.breastfeeding-problems.com/blood-in-breastmilk.html

I examined my nipple afterward & didn't notice any obvious cut or sore.  I will check out the link though. :)

Could be you had a bleb or something on your nipple and the suction has made it bleed, or could you have had the pump on a slightly higher strength than normal?
