Waking 3 times a night at 8mths!!!!!!!
« on: July 19, 2012, 13:59:22 pm »
Help desperately desperately needed we have fallen so far off the track I am lost where to begin!

My LO is 8 months old and she wakes 2-3 times a night for milk, if I refuse she goes ballistic and in fairness to her she does seem genuinely really hungry.  The reason being is she is not eating enough in the days.  Solids has been a problem from the start, she just has no interest in food.  I have tried homemade purees, ready made purees, baby lead weaning and she just isn't interested. The only thing she seems to like is fruit and yoghurt but not a lot of either.  At the moment I am giving her 4 x 6oz bottles a day and 3 meals.  I tried to drop down to 3 bottles to see if it would make her hungrier for solids to no avail, I have tried dream feeding her which made no difference also.  She's not even that bothered by milk, she likes to snack on it and have a couple ounces every half hour or so.

I posted on mums net about this problem and the feedback was if she's hungry just feed her in the night but I don't feel that is solving the problem.  She should theoretically be sleeping through the night and should be eating enough in the day but she's not and she is starving at night.

Her schedule is:

Wake at 6.30 am bottle
Breakfast 7.30 normally porridge or toast
9am morning nap 1/12-2 hrs
11am bottle
12pm lunch (a fruit pouch, chicken and pasta - eats the fruit pouch, chews and spits out the chicken and pasta)
2pm nap for 1hr
3pm bottle
5pm dinner (beef stew which will be spat out and half a yoghurt)
6.30 bath
7pm bottle and bed

Any suggestions of what to do would be greatly appreciated as I am slowly cracking up with exhaustion x

I just wanted to say I feel your pain, and have been through similar lately.  My boy is 9 months and solids is a hit & miss thing still with us.  I don't have any answers I'm sorry but wanted to show my support and you are not alone in this.  :-)

Hi there, welcome to BW! :) First, I don't think it's too much of an issue that she's not taking many solids at this point.  She's only 8 mo old and milk is meant to be the main source of nutrition until they're one. My DD also refused all puréed food and I didn't know about BLW, so she only started solids at 8mo, because that's when she could reliably use her pincer grasp to pick up little cubes of things.

There are a couple things that stand out to me in your post:

I have tried dream feeding her which made no difference also.
Did she take a full bottle at the DF or not? If she did, but still woke for the other feeds, I think that she's waking partly out of habit, because her tummy has been trained to be hungry then, not necessarily true hunger, iyswim.

She's not even that bothered by milk, she likes to snack on it and have a couple ounces every half hour or so.
And is that how she takes her bottles? If she's snacking every half hour or so, she's definitely not going to be hungry for solids because she's always getting just enough to keep her satisfied and uninterested.

TBH, I don't have any experience in FF, but I do know you can start reducing oz in the NFs to gradually wean them and then add those oz into the daytime bottles.  Here's a link you may find helpful: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=46907.0. Also, I'll see if I can't get some help for you from someone who's FF.

I would start by increasing her first morning bottle to 8 ozs and would also increase the others as well.  If she wakes in the night, offer 6 ozs... she is old enough that she should be fine with this straight away... she may protest when that first bottle runs dry overnight, but she will adjust ;)

If you want to stop the snacking, don't allow it ;)  Offer that first bottle and then push her as far as you can before offering another bottle (should be 4 hrs or very close to it)... let her try things like Cheerios/toast bits etc in terms of solids if she is refusing purees... give her 2 hrs after a bottle instead of the one hour recommended to ensure she is actually hungry... I wouldn't worry about causing her to eat enough that she won't take her next bottle given her reluctance right now ;)

Hugs hun... solids are just for fun right now... even if it isn't much fun!
