Has he been on antobiotics recently? Eat a lot of dairy? Or soy? Drinking a lot of juice or eating a lot of fruit?

I was going to suggest dairy too - we had this problem when we switced to cow's milk at 12 months.

If he is dairy-intolerant, he won't be able to digest the milk products (possibly yogurt, but even that can be a problem for some kids), so they'll go right thru him and yes, can burn the bum. To be sure, you'd have to do a dairy-free trial for a couple of weeks; it takes 2 weeks for dairy to clear the system, although you might see results much sooner and know from that to just stay off it and maybe try some again in another 3-6 months.

My thought would be teething... that always causes horrendous bum-burning nasty poops here :)

The thing in milk which causes the most problems isn't actually the lactose but the proteins in the milk, like the casein. Far more people are intolerant of or even allergic to the protein than the lactose. It would have to be a full dairy-free time to really know for sure.

My first thought was teething too, especially since you seem to be suggesting that this is something that's new/sudden.  DD's just had awful nappies with sore bum/bits before a molar arrived.

Lactose intolerance is really quite rare in kids... as PP has said, it's the protein that causes the issues for the most part :)
