7 week old 45 minute naps
« on: August 03, 2012, 14:41:28 pm »
Hi, could someone please advise me how to help my 7 week old transition from the first stage of sleep into the next.  It is so frustrating for us both, he wakes up after 40-45 mins, he's still tired and i'm at my wits end as i dont really know what to do. He used to be such a good napper and in the past week all that has changed  :'(

any advise would be really appreciated.

Hi Noellz,
Is he swaddled? Where is he napping? Do you use a paci?
A lot of little Los will short nap, and it can be frustrating but it is in part developmental. If you cant get longer than a 45 min nap then just offer more closer together to prevent too much OT by the end of the day :-*

Can you post your EASY or at least WU, first A, E and S times?

Have a look at these links as well - What do you think?

Thanks for your reply, its great to know someone is listening and may be able to offer advice  :)

I do swaddle him but he does manage to wriggle his way out, he goes down with a paci. During the day i put him in his cot in his own room for naps and he sleeps in our room at night in his pram.

His days can vary so Ive tried to keep an eye on his EASY routine so here is his day from yesterday:

awake at 7.00am
E    3½oz @ 7.15
A    Sat in chair while i got other son ready
S   8.20 - 9.10, fussed when he woke, gave paci but he wouldnt settle back

E    3½oz @ 10.15am
A    Dressed and kicked around on his floor mat
S    11.15 - 12.05 gave paci to settle him back
12.35 - 12.50 gave paci to settle him back
      1.20 - 2.00

E    5oz @ 2.10pm
A    had another play on his floor mat
S    4.00 - 4.20 in car

E    5oz @ 5.30pm
A    sat in swing chair, dressed for bed
S    7.00 - 7.30

E    2oz @ 8.30pm
A    a lot of fussing and very tired at this stage so no real a time
S    10.05pm - 6.00am

There are times when he wont take any more than 3½oz and although he slept well at night the daytimes are such hard work and come evening time he is so upset that even trying to give him a bath is too much for him.  I'm really at a loss as to what to do, so again i will take any advice.
Thanks
N.

Hugs, they really wake up at 6 weeks don't they!
Have you taken the BW temperament quiz? - http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=52283.0 I wonder if he is touchy and needs a bit more help to sleep, and gets OT easy ...

Any reflux or colic?

I'm wondering if you need to try reducing that first A time a touch to see if he will sleep longer, have you tried 1hr10 or so? (I know 1hr20 is typically avge for his age but some LOs need a short first A )

His second a (2 hrs) is really long, after a short nap maybe try again after 1hr10 again etc.

Hang in there x

OK i will try giving him more frequent naps today and slightly shorter A time, fingers crossed!

He is just awake now after 45mins but he's not crying so i may leave him to see if he will settle himself, this will give me a chance to take the quiz!
